If you are searching for Jaipur Diwali 2026 dates or a Rajasthan Diwali trip plan, start here. In most Indian cities Diwali is celebrated inside homes. In Rajasthan it spills into the street. Jaipur's traders decorate whole bazaars to a theme and switch the lights on together. Udaipur's palaces are doubled in the water of Lake Pichola. Jodhpur glows beneath Mehrangarh Fort, and at Nathdwara a 350-year-old ritual ends the festival. This guide to Rajasthan Diwali 2026 gives the dates, tells you what happens in each city and on which evening, explains the traditions behind it, and sets out how to plan the trip. Facts about past years are quoted from named reports, with the year stated.
Quick Answer
Rajasthan Diwali 2026 runs from Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November, with Diwali on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Jaipur is the main city for lights: in 2025, 26 markets were decorated and lit for six days from Dhanteras. Udaipur is best on Diwali evening by the lake, Jodhpur for its old-city markets below the fort, and Nathdwara for the Annakut on Tuesday, 10 November. A good first trip is three nights in Jaipur or five nights across Jaipur and Udaipur.

Why Diwali in Rajasthan Is Different
Diwali in Rajasthan has four features that set it apart.
- The bazaar is the stage. In Jaipur the trade associations of each market choose a theme, build gates and installations, and light the whole street. The markets are judged, and awards are given for decoration and for cleanliness.
- The setting does half the work. Forts, palaces, havelis and lakes are already there. Lamps and lights only have to be added.
- It is a trading festival. Rajasthan's merchant communities treat Diwali as the turn of the business year, with new account books and Lakshmi Puja in the shop.
- The folk traditions are alive. Mandana floor painting, the Annakut at Nathdwara and the visiting day called Ramshyama are still kept.
Rajasthan Diwali 2026 Calendar, City by City
This table is the core of planning for Rajasthan Diwali 2026. It shows where to be on each evening.
| Date | Festival day | Best place in Rajasthan | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu, 5 November | Day before Dhanteras | Jaipur | Arrive. Forts and palaces by day |
| Fri, 6 November | Dhanteras | Jaipur | Shopping in the Walled City. Market lighting is expected to begin around this day |
| Sat, 7 November | Chhoti Diwali, Roop Chaudas | Jaipur | Walk the lit bazaars. View from Nahargarh |
| Sun, 8 November | Diwali | Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur | Lakshmi Puja time, then the city at its brightest |
| Mon, 9 November | Gap day, Ramshyama visits | Any city | Greetings and visits. Some markets stay closed |
| Tue, 10 November | Govardhan Puja, Annakut | Nathdwara, Udaipur | Annakut at the Shrinathji temple |
| Wed, 11 November | Bhai Dooj | Any city | Quiet day. Good for sightseeing and travel |
| 17 to 24 November | Pushkar Fair | Pushkar | Fair and holy bath on Kartik Purnima |
The start date of the 2026 market lighting in Jaipur will be announced by the trade bodies. In 2025 the lights ran for six days from Dhanteras, and in 2024 for seven days.
Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur: Which City for Diwali Night?
Most people planning a Rajasthan Diwali trip have to choose one city for the night of 8 November. This table sets the three side by side.
| Point | Jaipur | Udaipur | Jodhpur |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character | Themed, illuminated bazaars | Lit palaces on a lake | Old-city markets below a fort |
| Crowd | Very heavy in the Walled City | Moderate | Heavy in the market area, mostly local |
| Best evening | 7 November for the walk, 8 November for the full festival | 8 November | 8 November |
| Main temple | Govind Dev Ji | Mahalaxmi Temple, Bhatiyani Chohatta | Local temples in the old city |
| Shopping | The widest choice | Smaller bazaars | Clock Tower and Sardar Market |
| Suits | Families, shoppers, first-time visitors | Couples, senior citizens | Travellers who want a local festival |
| Add-on | Pushkar | Nathdwara for the Annakut | Jaisalmer |
In short, Diwali in Jaipur is the largest and most organised, Udaipur Diwali is the most scenic, and Jodhpur Diwali is the most local.
Diwali in Jaipur: The Full Picture
Jaipur is the centre of the festival in the state, and Jaipur Diwali 2026 is expected to follow the pattern of the last two years. Diwali in Jaipur is organised on a scale that surprises first-time visitors. These are the facts from the last two years.
| Aspect | What is on record | Year and source |
|---|---|---|
| Number of markets decorated | 26 | 2025, Pink City Post |
| Who organises it | Jaipur Vyapar Mahasangh, with the association of each market | 2025, Pink City Post |
| How long the lights stay on | Six days from Dhanteras in 2025. Seven days in 2024 | The Sootr, ETV Bharat |
| Opening | A switch-on ceremony on MI Road at Panch Batti | 2025, Pink City Post |
| MI Road in 2025 | A pink theme with about 22,000 wishing lamps | The Sootr |
| Johari Bazaar in 2025 | A replica of Hawa Mahal | The Sootr |
| Chandpole Bazaar in 2025 | An "Operation Sindoor" theme with a light tunnel | Pink City Post |
| Tripolia Bazaar in 2025 | A tricolour theme | The Sootr |
| Chhoti Chaupar in 2024 | A pyramid structure built by artisans from Bengal | ETV Bharat |
| Awards | Given for the best decoration and for the cleanest market | 2024, ETV Bharat |
Themes change every year, so the 2026 designs will be new. What does not change is the pattern: MI Road leads, the Walled City follows, and the whole of old Jaipur becomes a walking route for the evening. This is the Jaipur Diwali celebration that travel guides mean when they recommend the city.
What a Jaipur Diwali Celebration Looks Like, Evening by Evening
The Jaipur Diwali celebration builds over four evenings. Each has its own character.
| Evening | What happens |
|---|---|
| Dhanteras, 6 November | The heaviest shopping of the year, especially for jewellery, utensils and vehicles |
| Chhoti Diwali, 7 November | Families come out to see the decorations. Good evening for photographs |
| Diwali, 8 November | Lakshmi Puja at home and in shops, then lamps and fireworks. Streets are busiest after the puja |
| 9 November | Ramshyama visits. The lights usually remain on |
Temples for a Jaipur Diwali Celebration
- Govind Dev Ji Temple, in the City Palace complex
- Birla Mandir, lit in the evening
- Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, visited before any new beginning
A Jaipur Diwali celebration is seen on foot. Planning for Jaipur Diwali 2026 should start with the evenings, because that is when the city is at its best. Keep the forts and museums for the mornings.
Jaipur Diwali Lights: Where to See the Pink City Diwali
The Jaipur Diwali lights are concentrated in and around the Walled City. A simple walking route covers most of them.
| Stop | What you see | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| MI Road, from Government Hostel to Ajmeri Gate | The first stretch to be lit | Start here before sunset |
| Bapu Bazaar and Nehru Bazaar | Shopfronts and overhead lights | No-vehicle zone in the evening in 2025 |
| Johari Bazaar to Badi Chaupar | The main themed display and Hawa Mahal | The most crowded stretch |
| Tripolia Bazaar and Chhoti Chaupar | Themed gates and installations | Good for wide photographs |
| Chandpole Bazaar | A separate theme each year | End the walk here |
| Nahargarh Fort | The whole lit city from above | Go on a different evening from the walk |
| Jal Mahal | The water palace lit on Man Sagar Lake | On the way to or from Amber |
Traffic and Parking: What Happened in 2025
The Jaipur traffic police issue a plan each year. The 2025 plan, reported by Patrika, is the best guide to what to expect for the Jaipur Diwali lights in 2026.
- Dates and time: 19 to 22 October 2025, from 6 PM each evening.
- No-vehicle zones: Ramniwas Bagh roundabout to Sanganeri Gate, Bapu Bazaar, Nehru Bazaar, Indira Bazaar, the stretch to Badi Chaupar, and Chhoti Chaupar to Gangori Bazaar.
- Parking: JDA parking at Ramniwas Bagh, Chaugan Stadium, Ramlila Maidan and Atish Market, among others.
- Entry and exit: New Gate for entry and Sanganeri Gate for exit.
- Heavy vehicles: barred from the Walled City.
For Jaipur Diwali 2026, check the plan issued in the first week of November. In practice, park outside the walls and walk.
The Pink City Diwali, in One Evening
Jaipur is called the Pink City for the colour of its old buildings, and the Pink City Diwali is the name visitors give to its festival of lit bazaars. If you have only one evening for the Pink City Diwali, do this.
- Reach MI Road by 5:30 PM and park at Ramniwas Bagh.
- Walk through New Gate into Bapu Bazaar as the lights come on.
- Turn towards Johari Bazaar and walk to Badi Chaupar and Hawa Mahal.
- Continue through Tripolia Bazaar to Chhoti Chaupar.
- Stop for sweets or dinner in the old city.
- Leave through Chandpole or return to your parking by the outer road.
This route covers the heart of the Pink City Diwali. The walk is about three to four kilometres at a slow pace. Wear comfortable shoes and carry water.
Jaipur Diwali Shopping
Shopping is half of Diwali in Jaipur. Jaipur Diwali shopping is a reason to visit on its own. Traders report their busiest week of the year.
| Market | Known for |
|---|---|
| Johari Bazaar | Jewellery: kundan, meenakari, polki, thewa and lac work, and precious and semi-precious stones. Also leheriya and bandhej textiles |
| Bapu Bazaar | Textiles, block prints, footwear and gifts |
| Tripolia Bazaar | Lac bangles and brassware |
| Chandpole Bazaar | Household goods and handicrafts |
| Kishanpole Bazaar | Textiles and wood work |
| MI Road | Larger showrooms, jewellery and restaurants |
What to Buy for Diwali
- Earthen lamps and clay idols of Lakshmi and Ganesh, sold on the pavements in the days before Diwali
- Silver coins and utensils on Dhanteras
- Bandhej and leheriya saris and dupattas
- Blue pottery and block-printed home linen as gifts
- Sweets: Jaipur is known for ghevar, and LMB in Johari Bazaar is a well-known sweet shop
Tips for Jaipur Diwali Shopping
- Shop in the morning or early afternoon. By evening the lanes are too crowded to choose calmly.
- Do the main Jaipur Diwali shopping on or before Dhanteras. Many shops close early on Diwali evening for the puja.
- For jewellery and gemstones, ask for a proper bill and a hallmark or certificate.
- Bargaining is normal in street stalls and unusual in fixed-price showrooms.
- Markets typically open at about 10 AM.
Udaipur Diwali
Udaipur Diwali is quieter than Jaipur's and is shaped by water.
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Main sight | The City Palace, Jag Mandir and the lakefront lit and reflected in Lake Pichola |
| Main temple | Mahalaxmi Temple at Bhatiyani Chohatta, a white stone temple about 400 years old. In 2024 darshan began at 4:00 AM and long queues were reported |
| Markets lit in 2024 | Bapu Bazaar, Bada Bazaar, Chetak Circle, Surajpole, Fatehpura and Bhatiyani Chohatta |
| Competition | The Chamber of Commerce held a contest among market associations for the best decoration |
| Viewpoints | Ambrai Ghat, Gangaur Ghat and Fateh Sagar |
| Best evening | Diwali, Sunday, 8 November 2026 |
- Lake-facing rooms and rooftop tables are booked first. Reserve both in advance.
- Lakeside hotels are reported to hold special Diwali dinners with fireworks.
- Travel guides list an Udaipur Light Festival around Diwali. Check the 2026 date with the organisers.
- On Govardhan Puja, families make a figure from cow dung outside the home and worship it.
- Udaipur Diwali pairs naturally with Nathdwara, about an hour's drive away, for the Annakut on 10 November.
For couples and for travellers who dislike dense crowds, Udaipur Diwali is the better choice of the two big cities. The old city is compact, and most of what you want to see is within walking distance of the lake.
Jodhpur Diwali
Jodhpur Diwali is a local festival more than a tourist event, which is its appeal.
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Setting | The blue old city below Mehrangarh Fort |
| Markets | The Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) and Sardar Market area, Nai Sadak and Sojati Gate |
| In 2024 | ETV Bharat reported the city lit up, with heavy crowds near Mehrangarh and Sursagar, Lakshmi Puja in homes and fireworks through the night |
| After Diwali | Markets were reported closed for Ramshyama, the day of visits |
| Viewpoints | Mehrangarh Fort and Jaswant Thada by day, and rooftop restaurants in the old city by night |
- Stay in or near the old city for Jodhpur Diwali, so that you can walk to the Clock Tower.
- Plan shopping before Diwali. The day after may be a holiday for traders.
- Jodhpur is known for its sweets and snacks, which travel guides list among the region's Diwali foods.
- Jodhpur Diwali fits well at the start or end of a longer route that includes Jaisalmer.
Nathdwara, Pushkar, Jaisalmer and Bikaner
Nathdwara: The Annakut
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Where | Shrinathji Temple, Nathdwara, Rajsamand district |
| When | The night of Govardhan Puja. In 2026 that is Tuesday, 10 November |
| What happens | A great offering of rice and many dishes, the chappan bhog, is made to Shrinathji. Members of the Bhil community from nearby villages then take the offering in a traditional "loot" |
| How old | About 350 years, according to ETV Bharat |
| Time in 2025 | Around 10 PM |
| Belief | The rice is kept at home through the year as a blessing |
Temple timings and entry arrangements are set by the temple on the day. Confirm them locally.
Pushkar
- Lamps are floated on Pushkar Lake at Diwali, according to travel guides.
- The Pushkar Fair comes later. Its 2026 dates are listed as 17 to 24 November, ending with the holy bath on Kartik Purnima. Confirm on the Rajasthan Tourism website.
Jaisalmer and Bikaner
- Jaisalmer is listed for its fort, Gadisar Lake and desert camps at Sam, with music and campfires.
- Bikaner is listed for its decorated havelis.
- Both are long drives from Jaipur, so add them only to a trip of a week or more.
Royal Diwali Rajasthan: What It Really Means
The phrase royal Diwali Rajasthan appears in many advertisements. It helps to know what it does and does not mean.
| What a visitor can experience | What remains private |
|---|---|
| Palaces and forts lit for the festival, seen from outside or on a regular ticketed visit | The Lakshmi Puja of the former royal families, which is a household ritual |
| A stay in a palace or heritage hotel, many of which hold a Diwali dinner, lamp lighting and fireworks for guests | Family gatherings inside the private parts of the palaces |
| Illuminated City Palace in Jaipur and City Palace in Udaipur | Any event that is by invitation only |
- In Udaipur, a local account records that Lakshmi Pujan was traditionally performed in the stores of the royal palace on Dhanteras.
- In Jaipur, the City Palace is illuminated and the Govind Dev Ji temple within its complex is a centre of Diwali worship.
- If a tour is sold as a royal Diwali Rajasthan experience, ask exactly what is included: which property, which evening, and whether the dinner and the puja are part of the price.
- The simplest way to have a royal Diwali in Rajasthan is to book a heritage hotel for the night of 8 November and ask what it arranges for guests.
Understood this way, royal Diwali Rajasthan is less a single event than a setting: forts, palaces and heritage hotels at their most beautiful. We have not listed prices or named hotel programmes for 2026, because they are announced by each property. A royal Diwali Rajasthan stay should be confirmed in writing with the hotel.
Rajasthan Diwali Traditions and Culture
Behind the lights are customs that families have kept for generations. Rajasthan Diwali traditions follow the same five days as the rest of north India, with local names and customs.
| Day | Local name | What is done in Rajasthan |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Dhanteras | Purchase of silver, gold or utensils. Markets at their busiest |
| Chaturdashi | Roop Chaudas, Chhoti Diwali | An early bath with ubtan, and lamps in the evening |
| Amavasya | Diwali | Lakshmi Puja at home and in the shop. New account books are begun |
| The day after | Ramshyama | People visit relatives, friends and elders to exchange greetings. Markets are often closed |
| Pratipada | Govardhan Puja, Annakut | Govardhan made of cow dung is worshipped. Annakut in temples |
| Dwitiya | Bhai Dooj | Sisters apply tilak to brothers |
Among Rajasthan Diwali traditions, two are found almost nowhere else: Mandana painting and the Nathdwara Annakut described earlier.
Mandana: The Floor Art of Rajasthan Diwali Culture
- Mandana is wall and floor painting done to protect the home, welcome the gods and mark celebrations.
- It belongs to Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and is especially strong in the Hadoti region. Meena women are its best-known makers, and the skill passes from mother to daughter.
- The ground is prepared with cow dung, local clay and red ochre. The design is drawn in white with lime or chalk powder, using a piece of cotton or a simple brush.
- Motifs include Ganesha, peacocks, women at work and floral patterns.
- The art has declined and is the subject of conservation efforts.
Food in Rajasthan Diwali Culture
| City | Sweets and dishes listed by travel guides |
|---|---|
| Jaipur | Ghevar with rabri |
| Udaipur | Malpua with rabri |
| Jodhpur | Gulab jamun ki sabzi and other local specialities |
| Pushkar | Rabri and malpua |
| Bikaner | Kesar feeni |
Rajasthan Diwali Culture in the Bazaar
Rajasthan Diwali culture is closely tied to trade. The decoration of a market is paid for and organised by its shopkeepers, and the result is a matter of local pride. A potter's lane sells lamps, a sweet-maker's lane works through the night, and a jeweller's street does a quarter's business in a week. Folk performers, including Ghoomar and Kalbeliya dancers, appear at hotel and city events. For a visitor, the best way to see Rajasthan Diwali culture is on foot in an old city on the two evenings before Diwali.
Two more points on Rajasthan Diwali traditions and Rajasthan Diwali culture. Potters in Udaipur's Kumharwada have reported falling demand for earthen lamps as electric lights replace them, so buying clay lamps supports a craft. And Jaipur's traders have in recent years promoted Indian-made lights and traditional lamps in their themes.

Practical Notes for Diwali Travel Rajasthan
- Stay location: in Jaipur, choose a hotel from which you can reach the Walled City without your own car in the evening.
- Monuments: check opening days and hours for Diwali day before you plan a fort visit.
- Driving on Diwali evening: avoid inter-city road travel after dark on 8 November.
- Clothing: light cotton by day and a shawl or light jacket after sunset.
- Fireworks: rules are set by court and government orders each year, and districts in the National Capital Region have had separate restrictions. Check the order for your city.
- Emergency: dial 112.
Good Diwali travel Rajasthan planning comes down to three things: a room near the old city, a vehicle booked in advance, and evenings kept free for walking.
Rajasthan Diwali Package: What to Check
Not everyone wants to plan each booking separately. A Rajasthan Diwali package is offered by many operators at this time of year. Before you pay, check these points.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which city are you in on the evening of 8 November? | Some packages spend Diwali evening on the road |
| Is the hotel within reach of the old city? | A distant hotel means missing the lights or a long wait for transport |
| Is a Diwali dinner or event included, or is it an extra? | Hotels often charge a compulsory festival supplement |
| Is the vehicle with you on the festival evenings? | Drivers also want to be home for the puja |
| What is the cancellation policy? | Festival bookings are often non-refundable |
| Is the operator registered, and is there a written invoice? | Protection if something goes wrong |
