Best Places to Celebrate Diwali in 2026: 12 Diwali Destinations, Dates, Itineraries & Travel Guide

Most lists of the best places to celebrate Diwali give you ten city names and a paragraph of praise for each. They rarely tell you the one thing a traveller needs: on which evening to be in which city. Diwali is not one event. In Ayodhya the great night is the evening before Diwali. In Goa it is the dawn of Diwali day. In Kolkata it is midnight. In Mathura it is two days later, and in Varanasi the famous night of lamps comes more than two weeks afterwards. This Diwali travel guide puts dates first, then tells you what actually happens in each place, how long to stay, and how to book.
For the meaning of the festival and the five days, see our Diwali 2026 guide. This page is only about travel.

The Diwali Travel Calendar: Which City on Which Date
Good Diwali travel starts with this table. It shows where the main event is on each day of the 2026 season.
| Date in 2026 | Festival day | Where the main event is | What you see |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday, 6 November | Dhanteras | Jaipur, Delhi, every market town | Markets at their busiest and already lit |
| Saturday, 7 November | Naraka Chaturdashi, Chhoti Diwali | Ayodhya | Deepotsav on the Saryu ghats |
| Night of 7 November into dawn of 8 November | Naraka Chaturdashi at dawn | Goa | Narakasura effigies paraded and burnt |
| Sunday, 8 November, evening | Diwali, Lakshmi Puja | Amritsar, Jaipur, Udaipur, Varanasi, Ayodhya | Bandi Chhor Divas at the Golden Temple, illuminated cities, lamps on the ghats |
| Sunday, 8 November, midnight | Kali Puja | Kolkata | Night worship at temples and pandals |

| Tuesday, 24 November | Dev Deepawali, Kartik Purnima | Varanasi | The ghats of the Ganga lit with lamps |
Keep this calendar beside you while reading the rest of the Diwali travel guide. Two points follow from it. First, you can see more than one of the famous Diwali celebrations in India in a single trip, because they fall on different evenings. Second, a Diwali trip planned only around 8 November will miss Ayodhya's main night and Varanasi's main night altogether.

1. Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh: Where Diwali Began
In the Ramayana tradition, Diwali marks Shri Ram's return to Ayodhya, which makes this the first name on any list of the best places to celebrate Diwali.
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Main event | Deepotsav on the ghats of the Saryu around Ram Ki Paidi, with rows of earthen lamps, Ramlila, aarti and a Ramayana procession |
| Date | Saturday, 7 November 2026, the evening before Diwali |
| Record | In 2025 Deepotsav set a Guinness World Record with 26,17,215 lamps |
| Diwali day | Sunday, 8 November: darshan at the Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan, and lamps across the city |
| Cost of darshan | Free. All passes at the Ram Mandir are issued free by the Trust |
| Stay | 2 to 3 nights, arriving by Friday, 6 November |
- Crowd: very dense on Deepotsav evening. One guide advises treating Ayodhya as a stand-alone two-day trip for this reason.
- Movement: walk or use an e-rickshaw on Deepotsav evening, and keep your cab at the permitted parking point.
- Arrival: pre-book the airport pickup or station pickup. Both are busy from 6 November.
- Combine with: Varanasi, about 200 to 220 km away by road, or Lucknow, about 135 km away.
- Read more: our Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026 guide, pass booking guide and Ram Ki Paidi laser show guide.
2. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: Two Festivals of Light
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| On Diwali, 8 November | Lamps on the ghats, the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and darshan at Kashi Vishwanath |
| Main spectacle | Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali, when the ghats are lit with lamps |
| Dev Deepawali date | Tuesday, 24 November 2026 |
| Stay | 2 nights for either date |
- If you can travel only once, decide which you want: Diwali in Varanasi on 8 November, or the lamp-lit ghats on 24 November. They are different experiences.
- Boats for Dev Deepawali evening are booked well in advance. See our Dev Diwali boat booking guide.
- The Ganga Aarti is free to watch. See our Ganga Aarti guide and the Dev Deepawali 2026 date guide.
3. Amritsar, Punjab: Bandi Chhor Divas at the Golden Temple
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Observance | Bandi Chhor Divas, marking the release of Guru Hargobind from Gwalior Fort along with 52 kings |

| Organised by | Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee |
| Entry | Free. The langar is open to all |
| Stay | 2 nights |
- Cover your head, remove footwear and wash your hands and feet before entering the complex.
- The fireworks are decided each year by the committee. In some years they have been limited or replaced with lamps, so do not plan the trip around fireworks alone.
- Other sights in the city include Jallianwala Bagh and the Attari-Wagah border ceremony.
4. Jaipur, Rajasthan: The Illuminated Bazaars
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Known for | The bazaars of the Walled City, lit for the festival: Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar and Chaura Rasta |

| Temples | Govind Dev Ji Temple and Birla Mandir |
| Best dates | Friday, 6 November to Sunday, 8 November 2026 |
| Stay | 2 to 3 nights |
- Parking and traffic are difficult on Diwali evenings. Explore the Walled City on foot.
- Markets do their busiest trade of the year in this week, so shop on Dhanteras or earlier and keep Diwali evening for the lights.
- Jaipur combines easily with Pushkar, where the annual fair runs through the month of Kartik and ends on Kartik Purnima, 24 November 2026.
5. Udaipur, Rajasthan: Lights on the Lake
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Known for | The City Palace, Jag Mandir and the lakefront lit up and reflected in Lake Pichola |
| Events | Travel guides list an Udaipur Light Festival around Diwali, with music and food stalls. Confirm the 2026 date with the organisers |
| Best dates | 7 to 9 November 2026 |
| Add-on | Nathdwara for Annakut on 10 November |
| Stay | 2 nights |
- Udaipur is the calmer of the two Rajasthan choices, which is why it is often suggested to couples and to travellers who want a Diwali vacation without heavy crowds.
- Lake-facing rooms are the first to sell out in festival week.
6. Kolkata, West Bengal: The Night of Kali
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Observance | Kali Puja, on the same new-moon night as Diwali |
| Date | Sunday, 8 November 2026. The midnight worship window is listed as 11:39 PM to 12:31 AM |

| The night before | Bhoot Chaturdashi on 7 November, when fourteen lamps are lit |
| Stay | 2 nights |
- Major temples are very crowded near midnight. Neighbourhood pandals are a calmer way to see the puja.
- Kali Puja is a night-long observance, so plan to rest in the afternoon.
- This is a different mood from Lakshmi Puja in north India, and it is one of the famous Diwali celebrations in India that many travellers have never seen.
7. Goa: The Burning of Narakasura
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Tradition | Young people in villages and neighbourhoods build tall effigies of the demon Narakasura. They are displayed and then burnt, marking Shri Krishna's victory |
| Competitions | Contests are held for the best effigy |
| When | On Naraka Chaturdashi, the eve and dawn of Diwali. In 2026 this is expected on the night of Saturday, 7 November into the dawn of Sunday, 8 November. Confirm locally |
| Afterwards | An oil bath before sunrise, new clothes and sweets at home |
| Stay | 3 nights, to combine with the beaches |
- The effigies are a town and village event. Ask your hotel where the nearest display is.
- Goa in early November is at the start of its tourist season, so it works well as one of the Diwali holiday destinations that mixes a festival night with rest.
8. Mathura, Vrindavan and Nathdwara: Govardhan Puja
| What | Details |
|---|---|
| Observance | Govardhan Puja and Annakut, remembering the day Shri Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill |
| Date | Tuesday, 10 November 2026 |
| What happens | Temples offer a "mountain of food". Fifty-six dishes, called chappan bhog, are typically prepared. Devotees walk around Govardhan Hill |
| Where | Mathura, Vrindavan and Govardhan in Uttar Pradesh, and the Shrinathji temple at Nathdwara in Rajasthan |
| Stay | 2 nights, arriving on 9 November |
- This is the destination to choose if you cannot travel on Diwali day itself. Reach on Monday, 9 November, which is a gap day in the 2026 calendar.
- Temple timings change on festival days. Check with the temple before you go.
9 to 12. Delhi, Mumbai, Madurai and Pawapuri
| Place | What is on record | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Chandni Chowk and Dilli Haat are named for festive markets and Diwali fairs. Gurdwara Bangla Sahib marks Bandi Chhor Divas | Best in the week before Diwali. Firecracker rules are set by court and government orders each year |
| Mumbai | Marine Drive is named for its lights and fireworks along the promenade | A city Diwali, with shopping and family visits |
| Madurai, Tamil Nadu | Deepavali in the city of the Meenakshi Temple, which draws large crowds | In Tamil Nadu the main observance is at dawn, with an oil bath before sunrise |
| Pawapuri, Bihar | The place of Bhagwan Mahavira's nirvana. Jain devotees visit on this day | A pilgrimage, with prayer and lamps and no fireworks |
Quieter Diwali Holiday Destinations
Not everyone wants crowds. Many families use the long weekend simply to get away. Travel sites list beach and hill towns such as Kovalam in Kerala among Diwali holiday destinations for this reason. If you choose one, remember that Diwali evening itself will be quiet there, with a few lamps and a hotel dinner. That is the right choice for some travellers and a disappointment for others, so decide which kind of Diwali vacation you want before you book.
Best City for Diwali, by Type of Traveller
Among all these Diwali destinations, which one is right for you?
There is no single best city for Diwali. The right one depends on who is travelling.
| Traveller | Best city for Diwali | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pilgrim or devotee of Shri Ram | Ayodhya | Deepotsav and Ram Mandir darshan |
| Family with children | Jaipur or Amritsar | Easy to reach, plenty of hotels, sights by day and lights by night |
| Senior citizens | Amritsar or Udaipur | Compact, with less walking through dense crowds |
| Couple | Udaipur | Lakeside setting and a calmer pace |
| Photographer | Ayodhya on 7 November, Varanasi on 24 November | Rows of lamps along a river |
| Culture traveller | Kolkata or Goa | Forms of the festival seen nowhere else |
| Krishna devotee | Mathura and Vrindavan | Govardhan Puja and Annakut |
| Overseas visitor on a first trip | Jaipur, with Delhi and Agra | Fits the standard north India circuit |
| Traveller with only one free evening | The nearest of these to your home | Festival-week transport is slow and full |
If we had to name one best city for Diwali for a first-time pilgrim, it would be Ayodhya, because the festival's own story is set here. We say that as a company based in the city, so weigh it accordingly.

Diwali Destinations Outside India
Readers abroad often ask whether they must fly to India. They need not. Diwali is a public holiday in several countries, and some cities hold large public events.
| Place | What is on record for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Singapore | Deepavali is a national public holiday, centred on Little India |
| Trinidad and Tobago | A national public holiday on 8 November, with the Divali Nagar fair in the week before |
| Leicester, United Kingdom | Described as one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside India, on and around Belgrave Road |
| Nepal | The festival is kept as Tihar |
| Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, Sri Lanka | Diwali is an official holiday |
These are noted for completeness. The rest of this guide is about Diwali destinations within India.
How a Festival Evening Runs: A Sample Time Table
Whichever city you choose, the main evening of a Diwali trip follows roughly the same pattern. Sunset across north India in early November is between about 5:15 PM and 5:35 PM, depending on the city.
| Time | What to do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Darshan or sightseeing while the city is still calm |
| 12:00 noon to 3:00 PM | Lunch and rest at the hotel |
| 3:00 to 4:00 PM | Leave for the venue. Roads begin to close in the afternoon |
| By 4:30 PM | Be at your place. Note the exit and agree a meeting point |
| Sunset to about 8:00 PM | The main event: lamps, aarti, illumination |
| After 8:00 PM | Leave with the crowd, on foot. Expect a slow return |
| Late evening | Dinner near the hotel. Kali Puja in Kolkata begins only towards midnight |
Booking Plan and Timeline
Good Diwali travel depends less on the destination than on booking in time. This is the practical centre of any Diwali travel guide. The festival is about a month away as this is written, so the early-booking window has nearly closed.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| This week | Choose the destination and the date from the calendar above. Book the hotel |
| This week | Book flights or trains. Check Indian Railways' festival special trains on NTES |
| By mid-October | Fix local transport: airport or station pickup and a vehicle for the event evening |
| One week before | Check the official programme, traffic plan and any pass requirements for your city |
| Two days before | Reconfirm the hotel and the vehicle in writing |
| Event day | Reach the venue early and agree a meeting point with your group |
What Raises the Cost of a Diwali Vacation
- The date: EaseMyTrip notes that flying a day before or after the festival usually costs considerably less than flying for 8 November itself.
- Late booking: the same source says fares rise sharply in the final two weeks.
- Location of the room: rooms within walking distance of the event are the most expensive and the first to go.
- Vehicles: cabs are scarce in festival week, so pre-booking matters more than usual.
- Packages: check that a festival package actually includes the festival evening, and not just a hotel stay on those dates.
Transport Notes
- Trains to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are the first to sell out, because the same weeks carry Diwali and Chhath traffic. Our festival train guide explains special trains and Tatkal.
- If you are coming to Ayodhya by train, fix the station transfer when you book the ticket. If you are flying, do the same for the airport transfer.
- For Ayodhya, a festival special between Ayodhya Cantt and Anand Vihar Terminal, 04213 and 04214, is reported to run from 1 October to 30 November 2026.
- Road travel on Diwali evening is slow in every city. Plan to be where you want to be by late afternoon.
Wrong Information to Watch For
While preparing this Diwali travel guide we read more than a dozen current articles on Diwali tourism and Diwali holiday destinations. Several carry errors that could spoil a trip. Check any plan against this table.
| Claim seen online | What is correct |
|---|---|
| Bhai Dooj is on 10 November 2026 | Published panchang calendars give Govardhan Puja on 10 November and Bhai Dooj on 11 November |
| Ayodhya lit about three lakh lamps | That figure is years out of date. The 2025 record was 26,17,215 lamps |
| Deepotsav is two days before Diwali | Deepotsav is held on the eve of Diwali. For 2026 that is Saturday, 7 November. Confirm the official programme before travelling |
| Kali Puja marks Kali's victory over Mahishasura | Mahishasura is the demon of the Durga Puja story. Kali Puja is a separate observance on the new-moon night |
| Dev Deepawali is the same as Diwali in Varanasi | Dev Deepawali is fifteen days later, on Kartik Purnima: 24 November 2026 |
| The Sikh Guru released was "Guru Hargobind Singh" | The sixth Guru is Guru Hargobind |
Practical Tips and Etiquette for Diwali Travel
The famous Diwali celebrations in India are acts of worship first and spectacles second. A visitor who remembers that is welcome everywhere.

| Carry a head covering for gurdwaras | Do not photograph people at prayer without asking |
| Keep small cash for lockers, shoes and local transport | Do not carry large bags into crowded venues |
| Agree a meeting point. Mobile networks slow down in crowds | Do not push to the front with children or elders |
| Follow police barricades and one-way walking routes | Do not step over lamps or rangoli |
| Keep a card with your hotel's name and phone number on each child | Do not leave waste on the ghats |

- A cotton scarf, useful as a head covering and against smoke

Conclusion
The best places to celebrate Diwali are the ones you reach on the right evening. That is the whole lesson of Diwali travel. Ayodhya's night is 7 November. Amritsar's and Kolkata's is 8 November. Mathura's is 10 November, and Varanasi's is 24 November. Whether you want a pilgrimage, a city of lights or one of the quieter Diwali holiday destinations, pick the celebration you want to see, check its date in the calendar above, book the room and the transport this week, and arrive a day early.
If Ayodhya is your choice for this Diwali trip, we are here to help with the local arrangements, from the airport or station pickup to a cab and an e-rickshaw for Deepotsav evening. Call or WhatsApp Your Travel Partner on +91 78811 55800, or look at our Ayodhya tour packages. Shubh Deepavali, and a safe journey.
