Diwali in Kolkata is unlike Diwali anywhere else. On the night when most of India worships Lakshmi, Kolkata worships Kali. The lamps are the same and the new moon is the same, but the goddess, the hour and the mood are different. Worship begins near midnight. The flower is red hibiscus. The music is Shyama Sangeet. This guide to Kolkata Diwali 2026 and Kali Puja Kolkata explains why Bengal keeps Kali Puja on Diwali night, gives the date and timings, traces the history, describes the two great temples and the well-known pandals, and sets out how to plan a visit. Facts are quoted from named sources.

What This Guide Covers

Four Common Questions, Answered First

Kolkata में Diwali पर Kali Puja क्यों होती है?

In Bengal's Shakta tradition, the new-moon night of Kartik is the night of Goddess Kali. The custom of worshipping her on this night spread widely in the eighteenth century under the patronage of King Krishnachandra of Nadia and was taken up by wealthy landowners in the nineteenth century, when devotion to Kali grew with the influence of Sri Ramakrishna. Kolkata, as the cultural centre of Bengal, became its biggest stage. So on Diwali night the city worships Kali, while lamps and fireworks are shared with the rest of India.

Kali Puja और Diwali में क्या संबंध है?

They fall on the same night, the Amavasya of Kartik, and both celebrate the victory of light over darkness and of good over evil. The difference is in the deity and the hour. Diwali in most of India is Lakshmi Puja in the evening. Kali Puja is the worship of Kali at night, around midnight. In 2026 both are on Sunday, 8 November.

Kolkata में Diwali कैसे मनाई जाती है?

Kolkata lights fourteen lamps on Bhoot Chaturdashi, the evening before. On Diwali night, homes and streets are lit with lamps and lights, Kali is worshipped in temples, family homes and community pandals from late evening until after midnight, devotional songs called Shyama Sangeet are played, and fireworks are let off within the permitted hours. Clay images are immersed in the following days.

Kali Puja क्यों मनाई जाती है?

Kali Puja is kept to worship Goddess Kali as the destroyer of evil and the protecting mother. In the Devi Mahatmya she defeats the demon Raktabija, whose every drop of blood produced another demon. Devotees pray to her for protection, for the removal of fear and ego, and for the well-being of the family.

Kali Puja 2026 Date and Timings

Kali Puja 2026 follows the rule that the Amavasya must be present at midnight.

EventDate and time for Kolkata
Bhoot ChaturdashiSaturday, 7 November 2026, evening
Amavasya beginsSunday, 8 November, about 11:29 AM
SunsetSunday, 8 November, about 4:52 PM
Lamps litFrom dusk on 8 November
Kali PujaNight of Sunday, 8 November, with the main ritual around midnight
Amavasya endsMonday, 9 November, about 12:32 PM
ImmersionIn the days after the puja, on dates fixed with the police

Amavasya is present at midnight on 8 November and is over before midnight on 9 November, so Kali Puja 2026 is on the night of 8 November. Each temple and pandal follows its own panjika for the exact start of the ritual, so confirm the time at the place you plan to visit.

Diwali Kali Puja: How the Two Are Related

Diwali in Kolkata confuses many first-time visitors. They often ask whether Diwali Kali Puja is one festival or two. It is one night with two forms of worship.

PointDiwali in most of IndiaKali Puja in Bengal
NightKartik AmavasyaThe same Kartik Amavasya
DeityLakshmi, with GaneshKali
HourEvening, after sunsetNight, around midnight
MoodProsperity and homecomingPower, protection and the conquest of fear
FlowerLotus and marigoldRed hibiscus
PlaceMainly the home and the shopTemples, family homes and public pandals
SharedLamps, lights, sweets, new clothes and fireworks
  • At Kalighat, Kali is worshipped as Lakshmi on this day, which shows how closely Diwali and Kali Puja are linked. That is the Diwali Kali Puja connection in a single ritual.
  • Bengal's main Lakshmi Puja is kept earlier, on the full-moon night after Durga Puja, as Kojagari Lakshmi Puja.
  • For the rest of the country's calendar, see our Diwali 2026 guide.

Outside Bengal the phrase "Diwali Kali Puja" is often used for the Bengali form of the festival. Understanding the Diwali Kali Puja link is the key to planning: in Kolkata the evening is for lights and the night is for worship.

Kali Puja History

To understand Kolkata Kali Puja, start with how it grew. Kali Puja history as a public festival is shorter than many people assume. The goddess is ancient. The annual autumn festival grew over the last four centuries.

PeriodWhat happened
Early textsKali appears in the Devi Mahatmya as the fierce form who destroys Raktabija
17th centuryThe Bengali scholar Krishnananda Agamavagisha is credited with giving Dakshinakali the form in which she is now pictured. Tradition says the goddess showed him the form in a dream
17th centuryKali enters Bengali mangalkavya poetry. The Kalikamangalkavya describes her worship
18th centuryKing Krishnachandra of Nadia promotes Kali Puja, and it becomes widespread through such patrons
18th centuryThe poet Ramprasad Sen (1718 to 1775) writes songs that address Kali as a mother, changing how she is seen
1809The present Kalighat temple is completed
1855Rani Rashmoni builds the Dakshineswar temple, and Sri Ramakrishna comes there
19th centuryKali Puja surges in popularity as landowners sponsor it on a grand scale
20th century onwardsCommunity (barowari) pujas by neighbourhood clubs become the public face of the festival

For a festival that feels timeless, Kali Puja history is well documented from the eighteenth century onwards. Two threads run through Kali Puja history. One is tantric, with night worship and strict ritual. The other is devotional, shaped by Ramprasad and Ramakrishna, in which the fearsome goddess is simply "Ma". Both are visible in Kolkata today.

Kali Puja Significance

Kali Puja significance lies in what the goddess stands for. Every detail of her image carries a meaning.

Feature of the imageMeaning given in tradition
The name KaliFrom "kala": she who rules time, and she who is dark
The swordDivine knowledge
The severed headThe human ego, which knowledge must cut away
The garland of headsThe letters of the alphabet, the source of language and mantra
The right hands raisedBlessing and the giving of boons. This gentle form is Dakshinakali, the form most worshipped in Bengal
Standing on ShivaIn the story, Shiva lay in her path to calm her after the battle
The tongueCommonly explained as her sudden modesty on realising she had stepped on her husband
  • Spiritual: the night of the new moon is the darkest of the month. Worshipping Kali on it means facing fear and going beyond it.
  • Devotional: she is the mother who protects. Ramprasad's songs approach her as a child approaches a parent.
  • Social: the public pujas bring whole neighbourhoods together.
  • Cultural: Shyama Sangeet, clay image-making and the art of lighting are all tied to this night.

For a devotee, Kali Puja significance is personal: a night spent with the Mother. In short, Kali Puja significance is the victory of good over evil, told through a goddess who destroys what harms and shelters those who call her mother.

Kali Puja Traditions

The customs of Kali Puja Kolkata are distinct from north Indian Diwali customs. Kali Puja traditions begin the evening before and continue until immersion.

Bhoot Chaturdashi: The First of the Kali Puja Traditions

  • Choddo prodip: fourteen earthen lamps are lit and placed at doorways, corners, windowsills and near the tulsi plant.
  • Choddo shaak: a dish of fourteen kinds of leafy greens is eaten.
  • Belief: the lamps honour fourteen generations of forefathers, the choddo purush, and keep away harmful spirits.
  • In 2026: Saturday, 7 November.

On the Night of the Puja

TraditionDetails
Night worshipThe puja is performed at night with tantric rites and mantras. Devotees traditionally keep vigil until dawn
OfferingsRed hibiscus flowers, sweets, rice, lentils and fruit
Two styles of worshipIn the tantric style, animal sacrifice has been part of the rite. In the brahmanical style, the goddess is worshipped as Adya Shakti with food and sweets and without sacrifice
BhogKhichuri and other cooked offerings, shared with all
Shyama SangeetDevotional songs to Kali
LightsHomes lit with lamps and candles, and streets with decorative lighting
Pandal displaysImages of Shiva, Ramakrishna and Bamakhepa, and scenes of the ten Mahavidyas
EntertainmentThe season is also known for theatre, magic shows and fireworks
ImmersionThe clay image is taken in procession and immersed
  • Kali Puja traditions differ between a temple, an old family home and a club pandal. Seeing one of each gives the full picture.
  • Many family pujas keep rituals unchanged for two or three centuries.

Diwali in Kolkata: The Celebration, Evening by Evening

For a visitor, the Kolkata Diwali celebration has a clear rhythm over three days. This is what to expect in 2026.

WhenWhat happensWhat a visitor should do

This is the answer to how Diwali in Kolkata differs from Diwali elsewhere: the city stays awake. A Kolkata Diwali celebration peaks after most other cities have gone to bed. Plan a rest in the afternoon of 8 November so that you can be out late.

Seen as a whole, the Kolkata Diwali celebration runs from the first lamp on Saturday evening to the last immersion procession days later.

Food of the Kolkata Diwali Celebration

  • Choddo shaak on Bhoot Chaturdashi
  • Khichuri bhog, labra and payesh at the pandals

Kolkata Diwali Package: What to Check

Some travellers prefer everything arranged. A Kolkata Diwali package is offered by many operators. Before you buy one, ask these questions.

QuestionWhy it matters
Does it include the night of 8 November in Kolkata? The main puja is at night
Is a pandal tour included, and for how long?A drive-past is not the same as a walk
Are both Kalighat and Dakshineswar covered? They are at opposite ends of the city
Where is the hotel?A central hotel saves hours
Is the vehicle available late at night? You will be out past midnight
What is the cancellation policy?Festival rates are often non-refundable

Kolkata Diwali Package With Your Travel Partner

Your Travel Partner is based in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, and we also arrange a Kolkata Diwali package for the Kali Puja weekend. Tell us your dates, the number of travellers and the kind of hotel you prefer, and we will send the plan, the inclusions and the price in writing before you confirm. Ask us the same six questions listed above. Here is how we can help.

  • Kolkata for Kali Puja: a plan built around the night of Sunday, 8 November 2026, with Kalighat, Dakshineswar and a pandal walk. Enquire through our packages page or by phone.
  • Ayodhya before Kolkata: Deepotsav in Ayodhya is on Saturday, 7 November 2026, the evening before Kali Puja. Travellers who want both can see Deepotsav on the 7th and reach Kolkata on the 8th if their flights connect. We can arrange both parts as one journey, starting with our Ayodhya tour packages.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Expecting the main event in the evening. The puja is around midnight.
  • Confusing Kali Puja with Durga Puja. Durga Puja is about three weeks earlier and is a different festival. Mahishasura belongs to the Durga story, and Raktabija to Kali's.
  • Trying to see Kalighat and Dakshineswar on the festival evening. Visit them in the morning.
  • Driving to the pandals. Use the metro and walk.
  • Photographing a family puja without asking. These are private homes.
  • Ignoring the fireworks hours. The police enforce them.
  • Adding Ayodhya without arranging transfers. If you are combining Deepotsav with Kolkata, fix the airport or station transfer, the cab and the e-rickshaw in Ayodhya in advance, or take one of our packages.
