Deepotsav or Dev Deepawali 2026: Which Festival Should NRIs Fly In For?
Deepotsav (5 to 7 Nov) or Dev Deepawali (24 Nov 2026)? Compare crowds, flights and weather, see both in one trip, with day plans for NRI families.
November 2026 gives India's two biggest festivals of light within 17 days of each other. Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026, the 10th Deepotsav since it began in 2017, lights the Saryu riverfront from 5 to 7 November. Dev Deepawali 2026 lights the ghats of the Ganga in Varanasi on 24 November. If you are flying in from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore or the Gulf, you probably have one trip and a fixed number of leave days. So the real question is not "which festival is more beautiful" but "which festival fits my family, my dates and my reason for coming to India".
This guide answers exactly that. It compares Deepotsav vs Dev Deepawali side by side, tells you which one suits which kind of family, gives a day-by-day plan for each, shows how to see both in one trip, and covers flights, weather, crowds, safety, the 14 Kosi Parikrama and the scams to avoid. It is written by Your Travel Partner, an Ayodhya-based travel company that runs cars between Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi through the whole festival season.
Quick answer: Choose Deepotsav (5 to 7 November 2026, main evening 7 November, with about 33 lakh diyas planned at Ram Ki Paidi) if you want Ram Mandir darshan and Diwali with family in India. Choose Dev Deepawali (24 November 2026, Kartik Purnima) if you want the lit ghats of Varanasi seen from a boat on the Ganga. With about three weeks in India, you can see both.
Key Dates for November 2026 at a Glance
- 5 to 7 November: Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026, the 10th edition. Main lamp lighting on the evening of Saturday 7 November.
- 8 November: Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) across India.
- 13 to 16 November: Chhath Puja, with very heavy travel towards Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
- Around 18 November: 14 Kosi Parikrama in Ayodhya on Akshaya Navami.
- 20 November: Dev Uthani Ekadashi and the Panchkosi Parikrama in Ayodhya.
- 24 November: Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, on Kartik Purnima. The same day is Guru Nanak Jayanti (Gurpurab), so many offices close and travel demand is high.
Festival dates follow the Hindu lunar calendar. Panchang listings place the Purnima tithi from late night on 23 November to the evening of 24 November 2026, so the Dev Deepawali lamps are lit on the evening of 24 November. Always re-check the final schedule announced by the district administration a week before you travel.
What Is Ayodhya Deepotsav?
Deepotsav is Ayodhya's celebration of Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, held on the eve of Diwali. The Uttar Pradesh government started it in 2017, and 2026 is its 10th edition. The heart of the festival is Ram Ki Paidi, a series of ghats on the Saryu, where lakhs of earthen diyas are lit at dusk by thousands of volunteers.
The scale has grown every year. In 2025, Ayodhya set two Guinness World Records: 26,17,215 diyas lit together and 2,128 people performing the Saryu aarti at the same time. For Deepotsav 2026, the administration plans about 33 lakh diyas along roughly 2 km of the Saryu riverfront, with about 34,000 volunteers, 65 lakh wicks and 55,000 litres of oil, according to a report in Organiser on 10 October 2026. Read more about past records in our post on Ayodhya's Diwali diya world records.
Beyond the lamps, Deepotsav brings cultural programmes on a stage at Ram Ki Paidi, lit temples across Ayodhya Dham, and a light show on the river after dark. The full Deepotsav 2026 schedule, as announced, is in our Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026 date, time and schedule guide, and the best spots for the night show are in our Ram Ki Paidi laser show guide.
What Is Dev Deepawali in Varanasi?
Dev Deepawali, often called Dev Diwali, means "the Diwali of the gods". It falls on Kartik Purnima, 15 days after Diwali. Tradition says Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura on this day, and the gods came down to the Ganga in Kashi to celebrate. Varanasi answers by lighting its ghats from end to end with diyas at sunset.
In 2025, officials said about 25 lakh diyas were lit across the ghats of Kashi, including 51,000 at Dashashwamedh Ghat alone, and a light and laser show with 3D effects ran at Chet Singh Ghat in the evening. The grand Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh is the centre of the evening, and the classic view is from a boat on the river, looking back at the curve of lit ghats.
For the full Dev Deepawali 2026 timeline and ghat-by-ghat details, see our Dev Deepawali Varanasi 2026 date guide. For boats, read our Dev Diwali boat booking guide, and for the aarti seating, our Ganga Aarti Dev Diwali tickets guide.
Deepotsav vs Dev Deepawali: Side-by-Side Comparison

Which Festival Should Your Family Choose?
Most NRI families should choose Deepotsav if they want Ram Mandir darshan and Diwali in India, and Dev Deepawali if they want the most photogenic night on the Ganga. Use this table to match the festival to your trip.
| If you are... | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Coming mainly for Ram Mandir darshan | Deepotsav | Darshan, Deepotsav and Diwali in one short trip |
| Spending Diwali with relatives in India | Deepotsav | Ayodhya on 6 and 7 November, family Diwali on 8 November |
| Traveling with parents over 70 | Either, from a quieter spot | Both crowds are heavy; a boat or a calm ghat is easier than the main ghats |
| Traveling with small children | Dev Deepawali from a boat | A boat keeps children out of the densest crowd |
| A photographer | Dev Deepawali | The curve of lit ghats seen from the river is the classic shot |
| A first-time visitor to India | Dev Deepawali, or Deepotsav with a local guide | Varanasi from a boat is easier to manage than Ayodhya's crowd on foot |
| Sikh or mixed-faith family | Dev Deepawali | 24 November is also Guru Nanak Jayanti |
| Flying in for one week only | One of the two, not both | The festivals are 17 days apart |
Choose Deepotsav if...
Your trip is built around Ram Mandir and Diwali. You land, do darshan on 6 November, watch the 33 lakh diyas on 7 November, and celebrate Diwali with relatives on 8 November. It is the strongest emotional reason to fly home in November, and it fits inside a 7 to 10 day trip. The trade-off is the crowd: on the evening of 7 November, Ayodhya receives a very large number of visitors, and you will walk a long way from the parking.
Choose Dev Deepawali if...
You have already celebrated Diwali, you love the ghats of Varanasi, or you want the most beautiful single evening of the year in India. From a boat, you see miles of lit ghats, the Ganga Aarti and the light show without pushing through a crowd. The trade-off is that you miss Diwali with family, and boat and hotel rates rise sharply on 24 November.

Diwali in Ayodhya 2026: A 4-Day Plan for Overseas Visitors
This plan is for families flying in for Deepotsav and Diwali. It avoids the two most common mistakes: arriving on the festival day, and planning darshan for the evening of 7 November.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 5 November | Land in Delhi or Mumbai, connect to Ayodhya or Lucknow, check in and rest. Book an airport pickup so you do not search for a taxi at night. |
| 6 November | Ram Mandir darshan in your booked slot, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan. Walk past Ram Ki Paidi in daylight to see where the lamps will be. |
| 7 November (Deepotsav) | Rest in the morning. Leave the hotel by early afternoon, before roads close. Watch the lamp lighting at dusk and the night show. Return late, after the first rush. |
| 8 November (Diwali) | Diwali with family, in Ayodhya or with relatives in another city. |
For temple rules and booking, read our Ram Mandir and Kashi Vishwanath darshan cab guide. For rooms near the temple, see our list of budget hotels and guest houses near Ram Mandir.
A 3-Day Plan: Dev Deepawali in Varanasi from Ayodhya
If you are already in Ayodhya, Varanasi is about 200 to 230 km by road, roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours. Arrive at least a day before Dev Deepawali, because roads near the ghats are restricted on the day and every hotel near the river is full.
| Day | Plan | Night |
|---|---|---|
| 23 November | Early Ram Mandir darshan in Ayodhya; leave by 10 AM; reach Varanasi by afternoon; walk the ghats in the evening to choose your viewing spot | Varanasi |
| 24 November (Dev Deepawali) | Kashi Vishwanath early morning; rest in the afternoon; reach your boat or ghat two to three hours before sunset; watch the lamps, the Ganga Aarti and the light show | Varanasi |
| 25 November | Sunrise boat ride when the crowds have gone; Sarnath if time allows; depart | - |
- Book your Varanasi hotel and boat early. Our Dev Deepawali boat booking guide explains boat types and how to book safely.
- Book the car for all three days. The driver drops you as close as police allow and waits at the parking.
- Agree a family meeting point on the ghats; phone networks slow down in big crowds.
- Carry little: ID, some cash, water, a power bank and a light shawl for the river at night.
Can You See Both Deepotsav and Dev Deepawali?
Yes, if you have about three weeks in India. Deepotsav (7 November) and Dev Deepawali (24 November) are 17 days apart, and November 2026 is packed with festivals in between.
| Date (2026) | Festival | What it means for travelers |
|---|---|---|
| 5 to 7 November | Deepotsav, Ayodhya | Main evening 7 November; hotels and roads very busy |
| 8 November | Diwali, all India | Family celebrations; shops and services slow down |
| 13 to 16 November | Chhath Puja, Bihar and eastern UP | Very heavy train demand on routes towards Bihar |
| Around 18 November | 14 Kosi Parikrama, Ayodhya | Huge crowds walking around Ayodhya for about a day |
| 20 November | Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Panchkosi Parikrama, Ayodhya | A shorter circuit; crowds again |
| 24 November | Dev Deepawali and Guru Nanak Jayanti | Main evening on the Varanasi ghats; boats sell out early |
Three ways to plan it
- Three weeks (both festivals): Ayodhya for Deepotsav (5 to 7 November), Diwali with family, a quiet week with relatives or in Prayagraj, then Varanasi from 22 to 25 November.
- Two weeks (one festival plus the circuit): Deepotsav and Diwali, then a relaxed Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Varanasi trip before flying home. Or the reverse: Ayodhya and Prayagraj first, then Dev Deepawali at the end.
- One week (one festival only): pick one festival and add one more city at a relaxed pace.
For a complete city-by-city route, see our Ayodhya, Varanasi and Prayagraj itinerary for NRIs, which has 3-day, 5-day and 7-day versions.
Where to Watch: Best Spots Compared
Ayodhya on Deepotsav night
- Ram Ki Paidi: the centre of the lamp lighting and the main stage. The core lighting zone is controlled on the evening, so follow police directions. Any pass is issued only by the administration; see our Ayodhya Diwali pass booking guide.
- Open ghats and the Saryu riverfront: free to stand on, with long views of the lamps. Reach by early afternoon to get a place.
- Your hotel or a rooftop: the calmest option for elderly parents if your hotel faces the river.
Varanasi on Dev Deepawali night
- A boat on the Ganga: the best view of the whole lit riverfront. Book early and only from a trusted operator.
- Dashashwamedh Ghat: the grand Ganga Aarti, and the most crowded point in the city.
- Assi Ghat: more open space and a shorter walk from the road; easier for families.
- Chet Singh Ghat: the light and laser show is held here.
- Namo Ghat: newer and more open, but far from Kashi Vishwanath.

Getting There from Abroad: Flights, Airports and Distances
Most overseas travelers fly into Delhi or Mumbai and take a short domestic flight onward. Lucknow and Varanasi also have some direct international flights, mainly from the Gulf, so check current schedules with your airline. Book early: fares in Diwali week and in the Dev Deepawali week rise sharply.
| Route | Distance (road) | Time (normal traffic) |
|---|---|---|
| Lucknow to Ayodhya | About 135 km | About 2.5 to 3 hours |
| Ayodhya to Prayagraj | About 170 km | About 4 hours |
| Ayodhya to Varanasi | About 200 to 230 km | About 4.5 to 5.5 hours |
| Varanasi airport to the ghats | About 25 km | Under an hour, more on festival days |
On festival days, add generous buffer time to every drive. We arrange airport pickups, railway station pickups and intercity cabs between Ayodhya, Lucknow, Prayagraj and Varanasi, as well as domestic and international flight bookings.
Weather in November and What to Wear
November is one of the most comfortable months in eastern Uttar Pradesh. In Varanasi, average highs are about 28°C (82°F) and lows about 16°C (61°F), with almost no rain. Ayodhya is similar. Early November is warm in the afternoon; by late November, evenings on the river feel cool, and the air can be hazy.
- Clothing: modest cotton clothes for the day, a light jacket or shawl for the evening, especially on a boat.
- Shoes: comfortable walking shoes you can slip off at temples. Expect to walk 2 to 4 km on festival evenings.
- Health: carry a mask if anyone in the family is sensitive to smoke or dust, plus any regular medicines in hand luggage.
Watching Deepotsav Live from Abroad
Not everyone in the family can travel. The main Deepotsav lamp lighting happens at dusk in Ayodhya, around 6 PM India time, and is usually streamed live. Our Deepotsav guide explains how to watch it. Here is what 6 PM India time on 7 November and 24 November 2026 means where your relatives live:
| City | Local time |
|---|---|
| New York, Toronto | 7:30 AM, same day |
| Los Angeles, Vancouver | 4:30 AM, same day |
| London | 12:30 PM, same day |
| Dubai | 4:30 PM, same day |
| Singapore | 8:30 PM, same day |
| Sydney, Melbourne | 11:30 PM, same day |
Daylight saving has ended in the US, Canada and the UK by early November 2026, so these times hold for both festivals.
14 Kosi Parikrama: Can Visiting NRIs Join?
Yes. The 14 Kosi Parikrama falls between the two festivals and is open to all devotees on foot, but it is demanding. It is a circuit of about 42 km around Ayodhya, walked over roughly 24 hours, usually starting before dawn on Akshaya Navami.
- When: Akshaya Navami, expected around 18 November 2026. The exact start time is announced by the Ayodhya administration.
- How many people: about one million devotees joined in 2025, according to the administration.
- Panchkosi Parikrama: a shorter circuit on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, 20 November 2026.
- Who should not walk it: elderly parents, young children, and anyone with knee, heart or breathing problems.
- Tips: walk in a group, carry water and ORS, wear well-tested footwear, and keep your phone charged with a power bank.
Practical Tips for Overseas Visitors
- Visa: most foreign passport holders need an e-Tourist Visa, applied for at least 4 days before arrival on indianvisaonline.gov.in. OCI cardholders do not need a visa. Carry your passport and OCI card on festival days.
- Money: carry some Indian rupees in small notes. Small vendors, e-rickshaws and boatmen prefer cash or UPI; larger hotels accept international cards.
- Phone: get an Indian SIM or an eSIM before the festival day, and download offline maps of Ayodhya and Varanasi.
- Hotels: book as soon as your dates are fixed, and confirm every night by phone a week before.
- Arrivals: book an airport or station pickup; taxis are hard to find on festival evenings.
- Parents over 70: since August 2026, devotees aged 70 and above can get a free Ram Mandir Sugam Darshan pass at the trust counter with Aadhaar. See our senior citizen Ayodhya guide.
- Temple bookings: Ram Mandir passes are free and only on online.srjbtkshetra.org. Kashi Vishwanath bookings are only on shrikashivishwanath.org. Arrangements can change on festival days, so check the site before you go.
Crowd Safety Plan for Families
Both festivals draw very large crowds. A little planning keeps the evening enjoyable for everyone.
- Fix one meeting point that is easy to find, such as a named ghat sign or a temple gate, and tell every family member.
- Put a note in each child's pocket with a parent's Indian phone number.
- Keep elderly parents at the edge of the crowd, not in the middle, and bring a folding stool if they cannot stand for long.
- Do not leave right after the show. Wait 60 to 90 minutes for the first rush to clear.
- Keep valuables minimal. Carry a copy of your passport and leave the original in the hotel safe if you can.
- Stay away from the water's edge on crowded steps, especially with children.
Beware of Festival Scams
No one sells a "VIP Deepotsav pass" or Ram Mandir VIP darshan. The open ghats are free, Ram Mandir passes are free on the official trust site, and any enclosure pass comes only from the administration. In Varanasi, book boats only from operators you can verify, never pay the full amount to a stranger on social media, and get the boarding ghat and time in writing. Read our Deepotsav pass guide before you pay anyone.
What Decides the Cost of a Festival Trip
Prices change every year, so we do not quote a fixed rate here. These are the things that decide what you will pay:
- Your dates: nights on 7 November in Ayodhya and 24 November in Varanasi cost the most.
- Hotel distance from the river: rooms near Ram Ki Paidi and the main Varanasi ghats rise the most.
- The car: the number of days and the vehicle size, from a sedan to a Tempo Traveller for large families.
- The boat in Varanasi: shared or private, and its size.
- Flights: how early you book.
For a clear quote for your dates, see our Ayodhya package and Varanasi package, or ask for a custom package.
Mistakes NRIs Make in Festival Season
- Trying to see Deepotsav and Dev Deepawali in a one-week trip.
- Arriving on the festival day instead of the day before.
- Planning Ram Mandir darshan for the evening of 7 November.
- Booking a hotel far from the river with no plan for the last stretch on foot.
- Leaving the Dev Deepawali boat booking until the last week.
- Taking elderly parents into the densest part of the crowd.
- Paying anyone for a "VIP pass".
- Forgetting that 24 November is also Guru Nanak Jayanti, when flights and trains are busy.
