Diwali in Australia 2026: Sydney and Melbourne Events Guide

Diwali is Sunday, November 8, 2026. See Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide festivals, late-night Lakshmi Puja times and Australian fireworks laws.

Diwali in Australia 2026: Sydney and Melbourne Events Guide

Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8, 2026 in Australia. Two things make it different here from the US and Canada. It arrives in spring, so many events are outdoors in warm evenings, and in the south-east the Lakshmi Puja falls late in the evening, not at dusk. Australia has no public holiday for Diwali, so the biggest celebrations are Saturday and Sunday festivals that start from October 24 and run well into November. This guide covers the dates, the puja times by city, the events we could confirm, what is on for children, and the rules on fireworks, which are far stricter here than most families expect.

The 2021 Census counted 684,002 Hindus in Australia, 2.7% of the population and 55.3% more than five years earlier. It also recorded 673,352 people born in India and 1,030,709 with Indian ancestry. Sikhs, Jains, Nepali and Sri Lankan Tamil families celebrate their own versions, which is why a large Diwali festival here often includes Tihar and Deepavali traditions side by side.

Everything below was checked on October 21, 2026, against organiser pages and official sources. Where something could not be confirmed, we say so.

Diwali Dates in Australia: Five Days, Not Quite the American Pattern

Do not copy dates from a US or Canadian guide. In North America, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj fall a day earlier than in India. In Australia, the guides we read put them on the same days as India.

FestivalAustralia dateWhat usually happens
DhanterasFriday, Nov 6Cleaning the home, buying gold, silver or a new utensil
Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali)Sunday, Nov 8, early morningPre-dawn oil bath and first lamps
Diwali, Lakshmi PujaSunday, Nov 8, eveningPuja, diyas, sweets, family dinner
Govardhan Puja, AnnakutTuesday, Nov 10Food offerings at temples
Bhai DoojWednesday, Nov 11Sisters pray for brothers and apply a tilak

The Govardhan Puja date comes from one guide, and another guide's table contradicts itself on Choti Diwali, so ask your temple which day it observes. The Sunday-morning Naraka Chaturdashi is backed by Sydney temple listings of a Lakshmi Kubera Pooja and Naraka Chathurdasi that morning.

When to do the Lakshmi Puja

Sydney's Lakshmi Puja window on November 8 is 8:04 PM to 9:33 PM, according to Drik Panchang. The Pradosh Kaal, the period after sunset when the puja is favoured, runs from 7:29 PM to 9:33 PM. Do not convert India's evening muhurat to Australian time, because it falls after the Australian window has closed.

Why the big gap between cities? New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT moved their clocks forward on October 4, while Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory did not. Only the Sydney row has a published source. For other cities, follow your temple's printed time.

What Diwali Means, and How It Reached Australia

The best-known story is from the Ramayana: after fourteen years of exile, Lord Rama came back to Ayodhya and the city lit lamps to guide him home. Hindus also welcome Lakshmi, Jains remember Mahavira's liberation, and Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas. For many Australian families, the festival is also a way to pass these stories to children who were born here.

Is Diwali a public holiday in Australia?

No. Time and Date lists Diwali in Australia as an observance, not a public holiday. A petition asking the Victorian Legislative Council to declare a Diwali public holiday gathered 384 signatures, and the page shows no government response. If you need the day, ask your employer or school early. Most schools and workplaces stay open, and Dhanteras, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj fall on ordinary working days.

Celebrating at Home with Kids

Spring helps. In most of Australia you can do rangoli outside, and a late puja means children can stay up for the first diya. Here is an easy plan that keeps children involved.

  • Craft in the afternoon: Paint clay diyas, make paper lanterns, or draw a chalk rangoli on the driveway.
  • Story time: Tell a short version of the Ramayana. Older children can act out the return to Ayodhya.
  • Safe light: Battery tea lights are a good stand-in for oil lamps near little hands. Keep any real flame away from curtains and out of reach.
  • Sweets: Ladoo, barfi, jalebi, kaju katli and gulab jamun, shared with neighbours.

A Diwali night with children

  1. Clean and tidy the house on Dhanteras or the day after, and put a rangoli at the front door.
  2. Find your city's Lakshmi Puja window, and let children nap if the puja is late.
  3. Set up a clean shelf with Lakshmi and Ganesh images, flowers, fruit and sweets.
  4. Light the diyas, starting near the puja space, then the doorway and windows.
  5. Do the puja and aarti, and let children ring the bell or offer flowers.
  6. Share sweets and a family meal, then call relatives in India.

Diwali Festivals by City

Melbourne

Melbourne Diwali on Saturday, October 31 is free and runs from 2 PM to 10 PM at Marvel Stadium Square in Docklands. The organiser, Celebrate Melbourne, bills it as the city's biggest Diwali celebration, with an eight-hour main stage, a dusk lighting ceremony, an inter-school dance competition, hands-on cultural stations, a Kids Zone and a food and artisan market. All food is vegetarian and the event is alcohol-free. Celebrate India is also listed at Federation Square on October 31 from noon to 10 PM, but one guide shows different dates, so confirm it with the organiser.

Sydney

Sydney's celebrations are spread across the west. CIA Diwali at Castle Hill Showground is on October 24 from 12:30 PM, and Diwali Mela Parramatta is on Sunday, November 1 from noon, both free. On Diwali Sunday, November 8, the City of Parramatta has a celebration listed with the time still to be confirmed, and the council sought an organiser for an event in Harris Park the same day, which was not confirmed when we checked. For something different, a Diwali party cruise on Sydney Harbour is listed for November 13 from $79.

Brisbane

The Diwali Festival of Lights is at King George Square in the CBD on Friday, November 6, from 11 AM to 10 PM. It is free with no booking, and Brisbane City Council confirms it. The Redlands Diwali at Capalaba is on October 31 from 3 PM, also free.

Perth

The Indian Society of Western Australia holds its Diwali Mela at Langley Park on the Perth foreshore on October 31 and November 1, from 3 PM to 9 PM each evening. Entry is free, and the listing mentions fireworks, live entertainment, food and market stalls. The performers had not been announced, and the organiser says times are still to be confirmed.

Adelaide

Adelaide's Deepavali Mela is on Saturday, November 7 at the Adelaide Showground in Wayville, from 12:30 PM to 10:30 PM, organised by the Hindu Council of Australia (SA). It is ticketed through Eventbrite, we could not confirm the price, and it includes a Ravan Dahan and fireworks.

Beyond the capitals

Ballarat's Diwali Mela is on October 24 (noon to 8 PM), Geelong's is on October 31 (2 PM to 7 PM), Hume Diwali in Craigieburn is on October 31 (1 PM to 9 PM), Cairns has a Diwali Mela on October 24 (4 PM to 10 PM), and Hobart has Diwali Tasmania on October 31 (3 PM to 11 PM).

Temple programs on Diwali Sunday

On November 8, Sydney temples have programs from morning to evening. The Sydney Murugan Temple at Mays Hill lists a 6 AM abhishekam (ticketed) and a day program from noon to 7 PM, the Sri Venkateswara Temple at Helensburgh lists a Lakshmi Kubera Pooja from 8:30 AM (ticketed), and the Sri Karphaga Vinayakar Temple at Homebush West and Sri Durga Devi Devasthanam at Auburn also list celebrations that day. Ticket prices were not shown, so call or check each temple's website. The BAPS Mandir at Kemps Creek has a kids' Diwali celebration on October 31 from $5 with registration.

Diwali Food and Shopping

Harris Park in Sydney and Dandenong in Melbourne are the best-known South Asian shopping strips for sweets, clothes and decorations, and both get busy in the week before November 8. If you want to shop early, OzIndia's Diwali Dhamaka Sale is listed at The Ponds Community Hub in Sydney's northwest on October 24 and 25, free to enter. Pre-order sweet boxes where you can, because the popular shops sell out before Diwali night.

Dhanteras on November 6 is the traditional day to buy gold, silver or a steel utensil. Buy from an established jeweller, ask for an itemised receipt and check the purity stamp.

Fireworks and Crackers: The Rules Are Strict in Australia

This is the biggest difference from North America. In most Australian states you cannot buy or set off fireworks at home at all, and Diwali has no exemption.

  • New South Wales: It is illegal to buy, possess or set off fireworks without a pyrotechnician licence or a fireworks single-use licence. NSW Police list on-the-spot fines of up to $2,000 for using them, and larger penalties for displaying or selling.
  • Victoria: WorkSafe Victoria says it is a crime for anyone other than a licensed pyrotechnician to buy or use fireworks, in public or on private property.
  • Queensland: Display fireworks can only be used by licensed people, although the state exempts some small fireworks. Check the government's unrestricted fireworks page before you buy anything.
  • Western Australia: SBS reported in 2023 that unrestricted fireworks such as sparklers can be bought by the public.
  • ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory: SBS reported in 2023 that the ACT has banned fireworks since 2009 except for approved displays, Tasmania allows them only around its May cracker night, and the Northern Territory on Territory Day, July 1.

We did not verify South Australia's current rules, and some of the national summary dates from 2023, so check your own state's regulator. Do not bring crackers from India or buy them online. The legal way to enjoy fireworks is a licensed public display, like those planned in Perth and Adelaide. Spring also marks the start of bushfire season, which is one reason authorities are strict.

Getting Around: Transport, Parking and Weather

Melbourne: Marvel Stadium Square is a short walk from Southern Cross Station, and trams run along Bourke and Collins Streets. The organiser says paid parking nearby is limited on the day, so take public transport.

Brisbane: King George Square is in the middle of the CBD. It has its own busway station, and Central Station is a short walk away.

Sydney: Parramatta and Harris Park are on the train network, and Castle Hill Showground is easiest by car or bus.

Weather: It is spring, so evenings are mild, but Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane can already be hot by day. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat for afternoon festivals, and a light layer for the late evening. Allow extra time for travel on festival weekends.

Heading to India for Diwali?

Ayodhya is where the festival began. We have written about the Ayodhya Deepotsav schedule, how to get a Deepotsav pass, the viewing spots at Ram Ki Paidi and Dev Deepawali in Varanasi.
