Chhath Puja 2026 will be observed from Friday, 13 November to Monday, 16 November 2026. It is the great four-day festival of the Sun god (Surya Dev) and Chhathi Maiya, kept with a strictness that few other fasts in India demand: no priest is needed, no idol is needed, and for about 36 hours the vrati does not take even a drop of water. This guide answers every question in the order in which the festival actually happens: the correct date, the full calendar, what is done on each of the four days, the Arghya time for your city, the Parana time, the samagri list, the rules, and how the festival is observed in Bihar and across India.

Chhath Puja Date 2026 and How It Is Decided
People search for this in many ways: "Chhath Puja 2026 date", "Chhath Puja date 2026" or, in Hindi, "Chhath Puja kab hai 2026". The answer to all three is the same, and here is how it is worked out. The word "Chhath" means "sixth". The festival is kept on the Shashthi, the sixth lunar day, of the bright half of the month of Kartik. Diwali falls on the new moon of Kartik, which in 2026 is 8 November, so Chhath follows in the week after Diwali. The Chhath Puja date 2026 is fixed like this:
- The Shashthi tithi begins late on the night of Saturday, 14 November (about 11:23 PM for New Delhi) and ends in the early hours of Monday, 16 November (about 2:00 AM).
- Shashthi is therefore present at sunrise and at sunset on Sunday, 15 November. That makes 15 November the main day, when the evening Arghya is offered.
- The festival starts two days before the main day, on Chaturthi, and ends one day after it, on Saptami.
The tithi timings above are the ones most widely published for New Delhi. One source lists them about an hour earlier. This difference does not change the Chhath Puja date 2026 in any way, because Shashthi covers the whole of 15 November in every calculation.
| Day | Date | Tithi (Kartik Shukla) | Observance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Friday, 13 November 2026 | Chaturthi | Nahay Khay |
| Day 2 | Saturday, 14 November 2026 | Panchami | Kharna (Lohanda) |
| Day 3 | Sunday, 15 November 2026 | Shashthi | Sandhya Arghya (main day) |
| Day 4 | Monday, 16 November 2026 | Saptami | Usha Arghya and Parana |
Why is Chhath so late this year? In 2025 the main day was 27 October. In 2026 an extra lunar month (Adhik Maas) falls earlier in the year, which pushes the autumn festivals later. This is why the Chhath Puja date 2026 is in the middle of November.
Chhath Puja 2026 Calendar: All Four Days With Timings
If someone at home asks "Chhath Puja kab hai 2026?", this one table is enough to answer. The Chhath Puja 2026 calendar below uses Patna as the reference city, because Patna is the centre of the festival. Sunrise and sunset have been calculated for each date. They can differ by a minute or two from your local panchang.
| Day | Date | Ritual | Sunrise (Patna) | Sunset (Patna) | What the vrati does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fri, 13 Nov | Nahay Khay | 6:05 AM | 5:01 PM | Holy bath, one sattvik meal |

| 3 | Sun, 15 Nov | Sandhya Arghya | 6:06 AM | 5:00 PM | Waterless fast, Arghya to the setting sun |
| 4 | Mon, 16 Nov | Usha Arghya, Parana | 6:07 AM | 5:00 PM | Arghya to the rising sun, fast is broken |

Kartik Chhath and Chaiti Chhath
A common follow-up to "Chhath Puja kab hai 2026" is "which Chhath?". Chhath is kept twice a year. The Chhath Puja 2026 calendar therefore has two entries.
| Chhath | Hindu month | 2026 dates | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaiti Chhath | Chaitra (spring) | 22 to 25 March 2026 (already observed) | Smaller, kept by fewer families |
| Kartik Chhath | Kartik (autumn) | 13 to 16 November 2026 | The main Chhath, kept on a very large scale |

Chhath Puja Arghya Time 2026: City-Wise Table
There is no separate "muhurat" for Chhath. The Arghya is offered to the Sun itself, so the Chhath Puja Arghya time 2026 is simply the local sunset on 15 November and the local sunrise on 16 November. Because India is wide, the time changes from city to city by more than an hour. The table gives calculated sunset and sunrise for 17 cities.
| City | Sandhya Arghya: sunset on Sun, 15 Nov | Usha Arghya: sunrise on Mon, 16 Nov |
|---|---|---|
| Patna | 5:00 PM | 6:07 AM |
| Gaya | 5:02 PM | 6:06 AM |
| Muzaffarpur | 4:58 PM | 6:07 AM |
| Darbhanga | 4:56 PM | 6:05 AM |
| Bhagalpur | 4:53 PM | 5:59 AM |
| Deo (Aurangabad, Bihar) | 5:05 PM | 6:08 AM |
| Ranchi | 5:03 PM | 6:03 AM |
| Varanasi | 5:09 PM | 6:15 AM |
| Gorakhpur | 5:05 PM | 6:16 AM |
| Ayodhya | 5:10 PM | 6:21 AM |
| Prayagraj | 5:14 PM | 6:20 AM |
| Lucknow | 5:15 PM | 6:26 AM |
| New Delhi | 5:27 PM | 6:44 AM |
| Kolkata | 4:52 PM | 5:49 AM |
| Mumbai | 5:59 PM | 6:46 AM |
| Hyderabad | 5:39 PM | 6:21 AM |
| Bengaluru | 5:49 PM | 6:18 AM |
In short, the Chhath Puja Arghya time 2026 is earliest in the east (Kolkata, Bhagalpur) and latest in the west (Mumbai).
How to use this table:
- Reach the ghat at least one hour before the time shown. The vrati enters the water well before the Sun touches the horizon.
- The evening Arghya is given while the Sun is setting, not after it has gone. The morning Arghya is given as the first rays appear.
- Times are astronomical sunrise and sunset. Hills, buildings or mist can hide the Sun a few minutes earlier or later. Follow what you can see and your local panchang.
- If your city is not listed, take the sunset and sunrise from the India Meteorological Department or any reliable panchang for your location.
Chhath Puja 4 Days Explained Step by Step
The Chhath Puja 4 days follow one clear line: clean the body, clean the food, give up food and water, then thank the Sun twice, once as it leaves and once as it returns. The table shows how the fast tightens from one day to the next.
| Day | Name | Food | Water | Main act |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nahay Khay | One sattvik meal | Allowed | Purification |
| 2 | Kharna | Nothing all day, prasad after sunset | Not taken during the day | Kharna puja, start of the long fast |
| 3 | Sandhya Arghya | Nothing | Nothing | Arghya to the setting Sun |
| 4 | Usha Arghya | Nothing until Parana | Nothing until Parana | Arghya to the rising Sun, Parana |
Two words are used throughout. The vrati (also called parvaitin) is the person keeping the fast. Arghya is the offering of water or milk to the Sun. Everything in the Chhath Puja 4 days is done by the vrati and the family themselves.
Day 1: Nahay Khay 2026 (Friday, 13 November)
Nahay Khay 2026 falls on Friday, 13 November. "Nahay" means to bathe and "Khay" means to eat. It is the day of purification, and from this meal onwards the home follows strict rules of cleanliness.
Nahay Khay Step by Step
- Clean the home. The house, the kitchen and especially the place where prasad will be made are washed. Many families finish this before the day itself.
- Take a holy bath. The vrati bathes early in the morning in the Ganga or another river or pond. If that is not possible, a bath at home with a little Gangajal in the water is accepted. Nails are trimmed and hair is washed before the bath.
- Bring water home. Those who bathe in the river carry some of its water home to cook with.
- Cook the meal. The traditional meal is arwa rice (raw, non-parboiled rice), chana dal and lauki (kaddu) sabzi, cooked in ghee with rock salt (sendha namak). No onion or garlic is used. Many homes cook it on an earthen stove with mango wood, in bronze or earthen vessels.
- Offer and eat. The food is first offered to the Sun god. The vrati eats first, and only once on this day. The family eats afterwards.
- Begin the preparations. Wheat for thekua is washed and dried in the sun, and someone guards it so that no bird touches it.
| Nahay Khay 2026 timing (Patna) | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sunrise | 6:05 AM |
| Holy bath | Early morning, around sunrise |
| Meal | Late morning to midday, after the bath and puja |
| Sunset | 5:01 PM |
Because of the lauki sabzi, Nahay Khay 2026 will also be called "Kaddu Bhaat" in many homes. After this meal the vrati sleeps on the floor on a clean blanket or mat for the remaining days.
Day 2: Kharna 2026 (Saturday, 14 November)
Kharna 2026 falls on Saturday, 14 November. It is also called Lohanda. The vrati keeps a full fast through the day, without food and traditionally without water, and breaks it only after sunset with the Kharna prasad. The moment that prasad is eaten, the long waterless fast begins.
Kharna Step by Step
- Fast from sunrise. The vrati eats and drinks nothing through the day.
- Bathe in the evening and wear clean clothes.
- Prepare the prasad after sunset. The main prasad is rasiya, a kheer of rice, milk and jaggery, with roti or puri made in ghee. Bananas are kept with it. It is cooked on a new or thoroughly cleaned stove, traditionally an earthen one with mango wood.
- Do the Kharna puja. The prasad is placed on a banana leaf or in clean vessels and offered to Chhathi Maiya with a lamp and incense.
- The vrati eats alone and in silence. By tradition the room is kept quiet. If the vrati hears a noise while eating, many stop eating at that point.
- Share the prasad. Family, neighbours and friends then receive the Kharna prasad. People travel across the city just to take it.
- The 36-hour fast begins. From now until Parana on the fourth morning, the vrati takes no food and no water.
| Kharna 2026 timing (Patna) | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sunrise (day fast begins) | 6:06 AM |
| Sunset | 5:01 PM |
| Kharna puja and prasad | After sunset, usually in the evening after dusk |
| Start of the waterless fast | As soon as the vrati finishes the prasad |
Families confirm the exact hour of the Kharna puja with their own elders or priest. The fixed point for Kharna 2026 is that the prasad is taken only after the Sun has set on 14 November.
Day 3: Sandhya Arghya 2026 (Sunday, 15 November)
Sandhya Arghya 2026 is on Sunday, 15 November. This is the main day of Chhath and the only major Hindu festival in which the setting Sun is worshipped. The whole family walks to the ghat, and the vrati stands in the water to offer Arghya.
Sandhya Arghya Step by Step
- Morning: make the prasad. Thekua (wheat flour, jaggery and ghee, pressed in a wooden mould and fried) and kasar or rice laddu are made in the purified kitchen. Nobody tastes anything while cooking.
- Afternoon: arrange the soop and daura. Fruits, thekua, sugarcane, coconut and the other items are arranged in bamboo winnowing trays (soop) and a large bamboo basket (daura or dala).
- Walk to the ghat. A male member of the family usually carries the daura on his head, barefoot, and it is not put down on the way. The family sings Chhath songs as they walk.
- Set up the place. At the ghat a small spot is cleaned, sugarcane stalks are fixed, and earthen lamps are lit.
- Enter the water. The vrati stands in the river or pond, usually up to the waist or knees, facing the setting Sun with the soop in both hands.
- Offer the Arghya. As the Sun sets, family members pour milk and water in front of the soop while the vrati offers it to the Sun. Each soop is offered in turn.
- Return home. The prasad is carried back carefully. Nothing from it is eaten yet.
- Night: Kosi Bharai. Families whose wish has been fulfilled light lamps under a canopy of five or more sugarcane stalks, around an earthen pot shaped with an elephant. This is done in the courtyard or at the ghat, with songs through the night.

For other cities, use the sunset column of the Arghya table in the Chhath Puja 2026 calendar section above. Sandhya Arghya 2026 in Delhi is at about 5:27 PM, in Varanasi at about 5:09 PM and in Mumbai at about 5:59 PM.
Day 4: Usha Arghya 2026 (Monday, 16 November)
Usha Arghya 2026 is on Monday, 16 November. It is also called Bhorka Arghya or Bihaniya Arghya. Families return to the same ghat long before dawn and wait in the cold water for the first light. When the rising Sun is offered Arghya, the festival is complete.
Usha Arghya Step by Step
- Leave before dawn. Most families reach the ghat between 3:30 and 4:30 AM with the same daura and soop, refilled with fresh prasad.
- Light lamps at the water's edge. The ghat glows with thousands of diyas while Chhath songs are sung.
- Stand in the water facing east. The vrati waits for the Sun with folded hands.
- Offer the Arghya at sunrise. As the Sun appears, milk and water are poured and each soop is offered, just as on the previous evening.
- Pray to Chhathi Maiya. The vrati prays for the health and long life of the children and the well-being of the family.
- Bless the family. Married women receive sindoor from the vrati, traditionally drawn long from the nose to the parting of the hair, and younger people touch the vrati's feet.
- Distribute prasad at the ghat. Thekua and fruit are shared with everyone present, including strangers.
- Parana. The vrati breaks the fast. See the next section.
| Usha Arghya 2026 timeline (Patna) | Time |
|---|---|

Usha Arghya 2026 in Delhi is at about 6:44 AM, in Varanasi at about 6:15 AM, in Ranchi at about 6:03 AM and in Kolkata at about 5:49 AM.
Chhath Puja Parana Time 2026 and How to Break the Fast
Parana (also written Paran) is the breaking of the fast. The Chhath Puja Parana time 2026 is on the morning of Monday, 16 November, after the Usha Arghya has been offered to the rising Sun. Chhath has no separate clock-based Parana window of the kind seen in Ekadashi. The rule is simple: first the Arghya at sunrise, then the Parana.
| City | Sunrise on 16 November | Chhath Puja Parana time 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Patna | 6:07 AM | After about 6:07 AM, once Arghya is complete |
| Ranchi | 6:03 AM | After about 6:03 AM |
| Varanasi | 6:15 AM | After about 6:15 AM |
| Ayodhya | 6:21 AM | After about 6:21 AM |
| Lucknow | 6:26 AM | After about 6:26 AM |
| New Delhi | 6:44 AM | After about 6:44 AM |
| Kolkata | 5:49 AM | After about 5:49 AM |
| Mumbai | 6:46 AM | After about 6:46 AM |
How Parana Is Done
- Complete the Usha Arghya and the prayers at the ghat.
- Many vratis first bow at a nearby temple or to the family elders.
- Break the fast with a little raw ginger and jaggery, or with the Chhath prasad and water or sharbat. Customs differ from family to family.
- Eat a small piece of thekua and some fruit from the offered prasad.
- Take a light, simple meal later in the morning. The body has gone about 36 hours without water, so heavy or fried food is best avoided at first.
In practice, the Chhath Puja Parana time 2026 for most vratis in Bihar will fall between about 6:15 AM and 8:00 AM, depending on how long the prayers and the walk home take.

Rules of the Chhath Vrat
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Keep the kitchen and prasad area separate and clean | Do not use onion, garlic or ordinary salt in Chhath food |

| Use fresh, unbroken fruit and new or purified vessels | Do not let prasad touch the ground or be stepped over |
| Sleep on the floor on a mat or blanket | Do not eat non-vegetarian food or drink alcohol in the home during the festival |
| Offer Arghya standing in water wherever possible | Do not use plastic or thermocol at the ghat |
| Keep the ghat clean and take back your waste | Do not break the fast before the Usha Arghya |
Who Can Keep the Fast?
- Chhath is kept by both women and men. It is not limited to married women.
- Once a person begins, the vrat is usually kept every year and is later passed on to the next generation of the family.
- If a death occurs in the family during the year, many families do not keep the vrat that year.
- Health note: a 36-hour waterless fast is hard on the body. People with diabetes, heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions, pregnant women and the elderly should speak to a doctor first. Many families allow such members to support the vrati instead of fasting themselves.
Meaning of the Chhath Festival, Chhathi Maiya and the Stories
The Chhath festival 2026 will be observed exactly as it has been for generations, because the festival has changed very little over time. Its meaning rests on three ideas.
- Thanks to the Sun. The Sun is the visible source of life, light and harvest. Chhath comes just after the paddy harvest, and the offerings are the season's own produce.
- Worship of both setting and rising Sun. The evening Arghya honours what is ending, and the morning Arghya welcomes what is beginning. Tradition links the evening rays with Pratyusha and the morning rays with Usha.
- Chhathi Maiya. She is Shashthi Devi, the goddess who protects children. In folk belief she is the sister of Surya Dev. The vrat is kept for the health and long life of children and the happiness of the family.
Stories Linked With Chhath
| Tradition | Story |
|---|---|
| Ramayana | After returning to Ayodhya, Mata Sita is said to have kept the fast and worshipped the Sun on Kartik Shukla Shashthi. A local tradition in Munger, Bihar, also places her Chhath there. |
| Mahabharata | Karna, the son of Surya, is remembered for offering Arghya to the Sun while standing in water every day. Draupadi is also said to have kept the vrat for the Pandavas. |
| King Priyavrat | The childless king's son was born lifeless. Shashthi Devi appeared, revived the child and asked to be worshipped on the sixth day. |
Whichever story a family tells, the Chhath festival 2026 will carry the same message: gratitude to the Sun and a prayer for the children. These are traditional accounts handed down through faith, and they are told in slightly different ways in different regions.
What Makes the Chhath Festival 2026 Different From Other Festivals
- No priest is required. The vrati performs everything.
- No idol is required. The Sun and the water are the altar.
- Rich and poor stand in the same water with the same bamboo tray.
- Every offering is natural and biodegradable.
- In July 2026, ETV Bharat reported that INTACH's Bihar chapter had prepared a dossier seeking a place for Chhath on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list and submitted it to the Union Ministry of Culture. The Chhath festival 2026 arrives while that process is under way.
Chhath Puja 2026 Bihar: Where the Mahaparv Is Biggest
Chhath is called the Mahaparv of Bihar. Chhath Puja 2026 Bihar celebrations will again see the Ganga ghats of Patna, village ponds and the old Sun temples fill with devotees on 15 and 16 November. People working across India and abroad travel home for these four days.
| Place in Bihar | Why it matters for Chhath | Sandhya Arghya (15 Nov) | Usha Arghya (16 Nov) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patna (Ganga ghats such as Collectorate Ghat, Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat) | The largest gatherings in the state | About 5:00 PM | About 6:07 AM |
| Deo Surya Mandir, Aurangabad | Ancient Sun temple with a very large Chhath fair | About 5:05 PM | About 6:08 AM |
| Gaya | Arghya on the Phalgu and at local ponds | About 5:02 PM | About 6:06 AM |
| Muzaffarpur | Budhi Gandak ghats and ponds | About 4:58 PM | About 6:07 AM |
| Darbhanga | The pond culture of Mithila | About 4:56 PM | About 6:05 AM |
| Bhagalpur | Ganga ghats in eastern Bihar | About 4:53 PM | About 5:59 AM |
- Other Sun temples: Ular (Ulark) Sun temple near Patna and Badgaon near Nalanda are also known for Chhath.
- Reaching Bihar: if you are starting from Ayodhya or Lucknow, a station pickup and drop or an outstation cab can be arranged in advance.
- Arrangements: the district administration normally announces safe and unsafe ghats, barricading, changing rooms, lighting and traffic diversions a few days before the festival. Follow the local list. Do not use a ghat marked dangerous.
- Holidays: Bihar observes public holidays for Chhath. Check the Bihar government's 2026 holiday list for the exact dates that apply to offices, banks and schools.
- At home: many families now offer Arghya on the terrace or in the courtyard in a small pool or tub. This is fully accepted and is safer for elderly vratis.
The Chhath festival 2026 in Bihar is also a homecoming: trains, buses and flights into Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga run full in the days before Nahay Khay. If you are visiting to see Chhath Puja 2026 Bihar for the first time, the evening of 15 November on the Patna riverfront and the dawn of 16 November are the two moments not to miss. Book your stay well ahead, because Chhath Puja 2026 Bihar falls on a weekend and rooms near the river fill early.

- In big cities, the local administration decides which water bodies may be used. For Chhath Puja 2026 India-wide, the safest step is to check your municipal corporation's list of permitted ghats a few days earlier.
- Outside India, Chhath is kept in Nepal's Terai, including Janakpur, and by communities in Mauritius, Fiji, the UAE, the UK, the USA and elsewhere.
- The Chhath Puja 2026 date is the same everywhere. Only the sunset and sunrise time change, which is why the Chhath Puja Arghya time 2026 must be taken for your own city.
- From village ponds to city beaches, the Chhath festival 2026 follows the same four steps in the same order.
Chhath in Ayodhya and Varanasi
We are based in Ayodhya, so we see this part of Chhath Puja 2026 India closely every year. Tradition connects Chhath with Mata Sita's worship of the Sun after her return to Ayodhya, and the Saryu ghats fill with vratis on both Arghya days.
- Ayodhya: families gather on the Saryu at Naya Ghat, Ram Ki Paidi and Guptar Ghat. Sunset on 15 November is about 5:10 PM and sunrise on 16 November is about 6:21 AM.
- Varanasi: the Ganga ghats, especially around Assi and Dashashwamedh, are crowded on both days. Eight days later, on 24 November, the same ghats host Dev Deepawali 2026.
- Visitors flying in for Chhath can use our Ayodhya airport pickup, and those coming by train our station pickup. Darshan plans are on our packages page.
- Reaching the ghat with a daura, sugarcane and an elderly vrati is not easy in a crowd. A pre-booked cab in Ayodhya to the nearest drop point and an e-rickshaw for the last stretch make it far simpler.
Travel Planning for Chhath 2026
Chhath is the busiest travel week of the year for Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. For Chhath Puja 2026 Bihar-bound trains and Chhath Puja 2026 India-wide travel, plan in this order.
- Fix your dates. To be home for Nahay Khay, aim to arrive by Thursday, 12 November. Most return travel begins from the evening of Monday, 16 November.
- Book trains first. Indian Railways' advance reservation period is 60 days, so regular trains for these dates opened in mid-September and popular ones fill almost at once. Railways usually announces Chhath special trains closer to the festival. Check only IRCTC or the National Train Enquiry System for these.
- Arrange the last leg. Stations are extremely crowded in Chhath week. Our railway station pickup and drop in Ayodhya and Ayodhya airport transfer can be fixed in advance.
- Consider the road. When trains are full, families travelling together from Ayodhya, Lucknow or Varanasi towards Gorakhpur, Patna or nearby districts often take an outstation cab so that the samagri and elders travel comfortably.
- Add a darshan. Many families combine the journey home with Ram Lalla's darshan in Ayodhya or a visit to Kashi. See our Ayodhya tour packages and the Ayodhya Varanasi package.
For cabs, station and airport transfers or a short pilgrimage around Chhath, call or WhatsApp Your Travel Partner on +91 78811 55800. Tell us your dates and the number of travellers, and we will confirm availability and charges before you book.
Within Ayodhya, short rides between the station, your stay and the Saryu ghats are easiest by e-rickshaw. Families with elders often keep one e-rickshaw or a cab for both Arghya days. Guests arriving by air can add an airport transfer, and all our plans are listed under tour packages.
Safety Checklist for the Ghat
- Use only ghats declared safe by the administration, and stay inside the barricades.
- Do not let children go into the water alone. Keep one adult with each child.
- Carry a torch, a shawl and a dry set of clothes for the vrati for the pre-dawn Arghya. Mid-November mornings are cold.
- Do not burst firecrackers near the crowd or the soops.
- Fix your return vehicle before the Arghya. After sunset and after sunrise, thousands leave together. A pre-booked e-rickshaw or cab saves a long wait.
- If the vrati feels faint, bring them out of the water at once. Health comes first.
- Carry your flowers, leaves and packaging back, or use the bins provided.
Common Mistakes and Wrong Information to Avoid
- Using Delhi's time in another city. Many websites print only New Delhi's sunset and sunrise. Patna's sunset is about 27 minutes earlier than Delhi's. Always use your own city's time.
- Looking for a "shubh muhurat" for Arghya. There is none. The Arghya time is the actual sunset and sunrise.
- Confusing the tithi with the Arghya. The Shashthi tithi starts on the night of 14 November, but the Arghya is on the evening of 15 November.
- Breaking the fast after the evening Arghya. The fast continues through the night and ends only after the morning Arghya.
- Believing only women can keep Chhath. Men keep it too.
- Mixing up Chaiti Chhath and Kartik Chhath. The November festival is Kartik Chhath.
