New Year 2027 in Ayodhya: Ram Mandir Darshan Guide
Planning Ayodhya for New Year 2027? Crowd outlook for 31 Dec to 3 Jan, free pass booking, vehicle restrictions, fog tips and a 2-day Ram Mandir darshan plan.
Quick answer: New Year 2027 starts on Friday, 1 January, so Ayodhya is likely to be busy from Thursday, 31 December through the weekend of 2 and 3 January. The best way to visit is to go at dawn, book a free Sugam Darshan or aarti slot on the official trust website if you can, leave your phone and bags outside, and plan to walk the last stretch because vehicles are restricted near the temple. Expect cold and fog.
Checked on 27 October 2026. Crowd and restriction details below come from reports of earlier New Years. The 2027 arrangements will be announced closer to the date, so confirm them before you travel.
This guide is about New Year week specifically. For the basics of passes and rules, see our guides to booking Ram Mandir passes and the darshan travel warning, which explains how to avoid fake VIP offers.
New Year 2027 Dates and Daylight in Ayodhya
| Day | Date | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Year's Eve | Thursday, 31 December 2026 | About 6:49 AM | About 5:18 PM |
| New Year's Day | Friday, 1 January 2027 | About 6:50 AM | About 5:19 PM |
| Weekend | Saturday and Sunday, 2 and 3 January 2027 | About 6:50 AM | About 5:20 PM |
Sunrise and sunset are our own calculation for Ayodhya. Because 1 January is a Friday, many people will have a three-day weekend from 1 to 3 January. That is a good reason to expect the largest crowds on those days.
What Past New Year Crowds Looked Like
Ayodhya does not publish a daily footfall count, so any number you see online is an estimate. Here is what was reported in recent years:
- New Year 2025: Reports before 31 December 2024 said lakhs of devotees were expected in Ayodhya, Varanasi and Mathura. The administration issued a traffic advisory. Many roads were closed to vehicles, and autos and e-rickshaws were barred from entering Ayodhya via some routes, with parking arranged outside the core area.
- New Year 2026: A report on 29 December 2025 said arrivals in the temple towns had risen steadily despite severe cold and fog, that security had been strengthened with zoning and patrols, and that a Ram temple trust member said the free passes until 1 January 2026 had already been booked.
- 1 January 2026: One report claimed over five lakh devotees visited by evening. That figure was not attributed to an official count, so treat it as an indicator of scale and not a fact.
The pattern is consistent: a heavy surge from 31 December onwards, tight traffic control, and passes that sell out early.
When to Visit: Crowd Outlook for 2027
| Day | Expected crowd | Our advice |
|---|---|---|
| Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 December | Rising | Good chance of a smoother darshan if you go at dawn |
| Friday 1 January | Very high | Avoid if you can, or be at the gate before sunrise |
| Saturday and Sunday 2 and 3 January | High | Long queues likely, go early |
| Monday 4 January onwards | Easing | Best bet for a calmer visit |
This table is our expectation based on past patterns, not a measurement. Weekdays after the long weekend are usually the calmest.
How to Do Ram Mandir Darshan at New Year
- Check the official notice. Visit online.srjbtkshetra.org a few days before. Type the address yourself and do not trust links forwarded on WhatsApp.
- Book a free pass if you can. Sugam Darshan and aarti passes are free and subject to availability. Slots for New Year are likely to fill early.
- Leave your phone and bags outside. Phones, bags and electronic items are not allowed inside. Use your hotel, cab or the official locker facility.
- Arrive early. Be at the entry before sunrise, at about 6:50 AM, and carry a printed pass and a photo ID.
- Walk the last stretch. Vehicles are stopped well before the temple. See our Ram Mandir parking guide for where cars stop.
- Plan the rest of the day. After darshan, visit Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan and the Saryu ghats.
If you do not have a pass, you can still join the general queue, which is free. Our guide on darshan without a booking explains how.
A 2-Day New Year Plan
- Day 1, early morning: Ram Mandir darshan, then Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan. Eat lunch away from the temple area where it is less crowded.
- Day 1, afternoon: Rest at your hotel. The streets near the temple are most crowded in the middle of the day.
- Day 1, evening: Saryu ghat and the Saryu aarti. Our Saryu aarti guide has the timings and the best viewing spots.
- Day 2: Visit the other sights at a slower pace, or travel on to Varanasi or Prayagraj.
For a fuller plan, see our Ayodhya 2-day itinerary and one-day Ayodhya tour.
Getting Around During New Year Week
- Expect road closures and diversions on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Ask your hotel which gate and parking area to use.
- Autos and e-rickshaws may be restricted from entering some routes. Plan to walk for part of the way.
- If you are arriving by train, see our guide to the railway station to Ram Mandir fare.
- For a driver who knows the diversions, ask for a quote on our cab service page, and for airport and station pickup see our pickup and drop guide.
Fog, Cold and Travel Delays
Late December and early January are cold and foggy in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Fog can slow roads, delay trains and disrupt flights, so allow a buffer of several hours if you have a connection. Carry a warm jacket, a shawl and socks, because you will remove your footwear at temples and may stand in a queue in the early morning. If you are travelling with senior citizens or small children, plan a shorter day and rest in the afternoon.
Darshan With Children and Senior Citizens
New Year queues are long and the early morning is cold, so keep the plan simple if you are travelling with children or older relatives. Choose the earliest slot, keep warm layers and a flask of warm water in your hotel room or cab, and avoid carrying extra items you will have to leave at the locker. If someone cannot walk far, read our guide to wheelchair and mobility help for senior citizens in Ayodhya before you travel, and ask the temple staff at the entry for the assistance that is available that day. Fix a meeting point for the group in case someone gets separated in the crowd.
What to Wear and Pack
- Warm layers that are easy to remove, a shawl or muffler and woollen socks you can wear on cold stone.
- Modest clothes that cover shoulders and knees, as is expected at temples.
- Footwear that is easy to take off, since shoes are left outside.
- A printout of your pass, a photo ID and a small amount of cash, kept in a pocket and not in a bag.
- A power bank and a charged phone for the journey. Remember that these cannot go inside the temple.
Scams to Watch For at New Year
Busy weeks bring touts. Be careful of anyone who promises a quick entry for a fee, a fixed puja package that you did not ask for, or a hotel room at an unusually low price on a messaging app. The only official booking site is the temple trust's, and passes are free. If a driver or guide says the road ahead is closed and offers to take you somewhere else, check with the police on duty or your hotel before changing your plan. A confirmed booking in writing, with the cancellation terms, protects you.
Stay: Book Early
Hotel and dharamshala rooms in Ayodhya fill up in the days around New Year, and rates tend to rise. In Varanasi, one report before New Year 2025 said hotel rates rose several times over their usual level. Ayodhya may see similar jumps. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, confirm the cancellation terms, and check how far the hotel is from the point where vehicles are stopped.
Pran Pratishtha Dwadashi in January
The Ram Mandir marks its Pran Pratishtha anniversary by the traditional calendar, on Paush Shukla Dwadashi. In 2025 it fell on 31 December and drew a large crowd. In 2027 it is expected in January, on a different date from New Year, so do not assume the two coincide. Check the exact date in a panchang before you plan.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Arriving at the temple at midday on 1 January and expecting a short queue.
- Paying anyone for a VIP pass. There is no paid VIP pass, and nobody can sell you one.
- Carrying a phone or bag to the entry and then having nowhere to leave it.
- Booking a hotel far from where vehicles are stopped without a plan for the walk.
- Leaving the last day for travel with no buffer for fog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ayodhya crowded on New Year?
Yes. Temple towns in Uttar Pradesh see a large surge around 31 December and 1 January, and Ayodhya is one of the busiest. Reports before New Year 2026 spoke of lakhs of visitors across the state's temple towns, and the temple trust said the free passes for the period had already been booked. Plan your darshan for the early morning and expect long queues.
What are the Ram Mandir darshan timings on New Year?
The temple trust sets the timings and may extend or change them on busy days. Do not rely on a fixed time from a website. Check the notice on the official trust site, online.srjbtkshetra.org, a day or two before you travel, and arrive early at the gate.
Do I need a pass for Ram Mandir darshan?
General darshan is free and needs no pass. Free Sugam Darshan and aarti passes can be booked on the official website for a date and time slot, subject to availability. There is no paid VIP pass, and nobody can sell you one. See our guide to booking passes for the steps.
Can I take my phone inside Ram Mandir?
No. Mobile phones, bags and electronic items are not allowed inside the temple. Leave them at your hotel, in your cab or at the official locker facility, and carry a printout of your pass if you have one.
Which is the best day to visit Ayodhya around New Year 2027?
New Year's Day falls on Friday, 1 January 2027, and the weekend that follows is likely to be crowded. The least crowded options are usually early morning on 30 or 31 December, or a weekday after the long weekend. This is an expectation, not a count.
Will vehicles be allowed near Ram Mandir on 1 January?
Not near the temple. Before New Year 2025, the administration closed many roads to vehicles and barred autos and e-rickshaws from entering via some routes, with parking arranged outside the core area. Expect similar restrictions in 2027 and plan to walk the last stretch.
Is it very cold and foggy in Ayodhya in January?
Yes. Late December and early January are cold and foggy in eastern Uttar Pradesh, which can slow trains and road travel and delay flights. Carry warm clothes, avoid tight connections and allow extra time.
How many days do I need in Ayodhya at New Year?
Two days is comfortable: one for Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan, and one for the Saryu ghats and other sights. If you only have one day, start at dawn and keep the evening free for the Saryu aarti.
