The best places to visit in Agra are the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, Mehtab Bagh and Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. An Indian adult pays ₹50 for entry, plus an optional ₹200 for the main mausoleum. Two days is a comfortable plan.

Is the Taj Mahal Closed on Friday? What to Do Instead
Yes. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) states that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing. Night viewing is also closed on Fridays.
Most other monuments stay open. The ASI fee table lists a Friday rate for Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's Tomb, Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, Mehtab Bagh, Ram Bagh and Mariam's Tomb. Confirm the day's status before you set out.
If Friday is part of your trip, use this order:
- Morning: Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km from Agra.
- Afternoon: Sikandra, for Akbar's Tomb and Mariam's Tomb.
- Evening: Mehtab Bagh, to see the Taj Mahal across the river before sunset.
- Saturday morning: the Taj Mahal at sunrise.
The Friday order: Fatehpur Sikri, Sikandra, Mehtab Bagh, then the Taj Mahal on Saturday.
If you only have a Friday, you can still see the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh. It can also be seen from parts of Agra Fort.

Children below 15 years enter free, both Indian and foreign, according to the same ASI page. SAARC and BIMSTEC nationals pay different rates, which the official page lists. The Agra district website adds that foreign nationals pay an extra ₹500 ADA toll at Mehtab Bagh, which is not charged on Fridays.

How to Buy Taj Mahal Tickets Safely
- Use only the official ASI channels: asiagracircle.in, or tajmahal.gov.in.
- Add the ₹200 mausoleum ticket if you want to enter the main tomb chamber.
- Carry a government-issued photo ID. The ASI page asks every visitor to have one.
- Use the separate queue for domestic or foreign visitors. Ticket counters open one hour before sunrise and close 45 minutes before sunset.
Third-party sites can add their own fees. Ticket complaints go to the ASI, not to UP Tourism, according to the official page.
Taj Mahal Timings and Night Viewing
The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset on regular days. Because sunrise and sunset shift through the year, the opening time shifts too. At present the Southern Gate is exit only.
Can You See the Taj Mahal at Night?
Yes, on five nights a month: the full moon night, plus the two nights before it and the two nights after it. Night viewing is closed on Fridays and in the month of Ramzan. The ASI publishes the yearly schedule as an image on its night viewing page.

3. Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is an abandoned Mughal capital about 40 km from Agra, inscribed by UNESCO in 1986. Akbar made it his capital in the 1570s, and the court moved away within two decades. 4. Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb
Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb is often called the Baby Taj. Nur Jahan had it built in the 1620s for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg. It stands on the eastern bank of the Yamuna and is known for delicate inlay work in marble. It is compact, so an hour is usually enough. Indian visitors pay ₹30, or ₹25 on Fridays.
5. Mehtab Bagh
Mehtab Bagh is the garden directly opposite the Taj Mahal on the far bank of the Yamuna. The Agra district website calls it the finest vantage point for viewing and photographing the Taj. It was laid out by Babur and later aligned by Shah Jahan with the Taj Mahal. The garden is open from sunrise to sunset on all days, and it is about 8 km from Agra Fort by road. Indian visitors pay ₹25.
6. Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra
Akbar died in 1605, and his tomb at Sikandra was completed under his son Jahangir. It is built of red sandstone and marble in a large walled garden. Sikandra lies on the Agra to Mathura road, roughly 10 km from the city centre. Indian visitors pay ₹30, or ₹25 on Fridays.
7. Mariam's Tomb
Mariam's Tomb is the resting place of Mariam-uz-Zamani, the wife of Akbar and the mother of Jahangir. It stands a short distance from Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra. Indian visitors pay ₹25. Combine it with Akbar's Tomb in one visit.
8. Chini Ka Rauza
Chini Ka Rauza is the tomb of Afzal Khan, a poet and minister at Shah Jahan's court. It is known for its glazed tile decoration. It lies on the same side of the Yamuna as Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb, so the two make an easy pair. Check the ticket rate at the gate, as it is not in the ASI fee table above.
9. Agra Jama Masjid
Agra Jama Masjid was built in 1648 and is associated with Jahanara Begum, the daughter of Shah Jahan. It stands near Agra Fort and the old bazaars. It is an active mosque, so dress modestly and expect to remove your shoes.
10. Ram Bagh
Ram Bagh is regarded as one of the earliest Mughal gardens in India and is associated with Babur. It sits on the Yamuna bank and is a calm stop between the heavier monuments. Indian visitors pay ₹25.
11. Guru Ka Taal
Guru Ka Taal is a gurdwara at Sikandra. It marks the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur is remembered to have courted arrest in 1675. Entry is free, and visitors cover their heads. It fits naturally into a Sikandra morning.
12. Mankameshwar Temple
Mankameshwar is a Shiva temple in the old city, near Agra Fort. It is traditionally counted among the four Shiva temples that guard Agra, alongside Rajeshwar, Balkeshwar and Prithvinath. Expect a larger crowd on Mondays. Temple timings vary, so check locally before you go.
13. Soami Bagh
Soami Bagh is the Radhasoami samadhi, a white marble memorial where construction began in 1904 and is still continuing. It is an active place of worship, so keep your visit quiet and respectful.
